Part-Time Position Summary The Certified Instructor I is responsible for leading safe, engaging, and inclusive group exercise classes that promote healthy living and member engagement within the Fairfield Family YMCA branch. Instructors may teach a variety of classes including water aerobics, Zumba, yoga, strength and conditioning, active older adult fitness, and other group exercise formats based on branch needs and participant interest. This position plays a vital role in creating a welcoming and motivating environment that aligns with the YMCA's mission of strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Essential Functions Lead high-quality group exercise classes in accordance with YMCA standards and branch expectations Instruct members safely through proper exercise techniques, movement modifications, and class progressions Create an inclusive and encouraging environment for participants of all fitness levels and backgrounds Arrive prepared and on time for scheduled classes, including setup and breakdown of equipment Monitor participant safety and respond appropriately to emergencies or incidents Build positive relationships with members and encourage ongoing participation and retention Assist with member engagement, class promotion, and branch wellness initiatives Maintain cleanliness and organization of fitness spaces and equipment Communicate effectively with supervisors regarding class participation, equipment needs, and scheduling concerns Support YMCA special events, wellness programming, and community engagement efforts as assigned Uphold all YMCA policies, procedures, and risk management standards Qualifications Must be at least 18 years of age Current nationally recognized Group Exercise or Personal Training Certification required through one of the following organizations: o ISSA o NASM o ACE Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification required (or ability to obtain within required timeframe) Previous experience teaching group exercise classes preferred Experience teaching one or more of the following preferred: o Water Aerobics o Zumba o Yoga o Strength & Conditioning o Senior Fitness o Cardio-Based Group Exercise Strong communication, interpersonal, and motivational skills Ability to adapt instruction for varying fitness levels and participant needs Ability to work flexible hours including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed Physical Requirements Ability to lead and demonstrate physical exercise activities for extended periods of time Ability to lift, move, and set up fitness equipment as needed Ability to work in indoor fitness studios and aquatic environments Ability to hear music, participant questions, and emergency signals during class instruction YMCA Competencies Relationship Building Communication Inclusion Emotional Maturity Program Quality Member Engagement Work Environment This position operates within a fitness and recreation environment that may include fitness studios, gymnasiums, and aquatic areas. Noise levels and physical activity levels may vary depending on class format and participant attendance. Pay:
$19.75 - $25.00 per hour Application Question(s): Do you currently hold a nationally recognized Group Exercise or Personal Training certification through ISSA, NASM, ACE or an equivalent organization? Which group exercise formats are you currently qualified and comfortable teaching? Are you currently certified in CPR/AED & First Aid, or willing to obtain certification within the required timeframe? This position may require morning, evening, weekend and holiday availability. Please describe your current availabability and your preferred teaching schedule.
