Job Description

Recreation Leader III for S ummer Food Service Program (SFSP) Work up to 28 hrs./week Multiple positions (Part-Time/Temporary) Season starts June 1, 2026; Season ends August 31, 2026 The Parks and Recreation Department oversees Parks and Programs, REACH, Senior Services, Contract Classes, Media and Communications, Special Events, Transportation, and the Pico Rivera Golf Course. The amenities provided by the Parks and Recreation Department are enjoyed by thousands of people every year. The amenities include 100 acres of parks and open spaces, swimming pool, athletic fields, walking paths, Senior Center, and batting cages. The Position The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is a grant-funded summer program provided in partnership with the California Department of Education and the United States Department of Agriculture. SFSP is designed to provide free nutritional meals to children and youth ages 18 years and under. Both breakfast and lunch will be served during the summer school break. SFSP Sites Recreation Leaders are responsible for serving complete meal components to approximately 100 participants per day.
Typical work schedule:
Monday through Friday, 7:00AM to 9:30AM & 11:00AM to 1:30PM. Incumbents must be available to work both shifts and also attend mandatory SFSP & staff in-service training on June 10 and June 12, 2026 . The ideal candidate will have the ability to perform the following essential functions: Supervise and ensure the safety of participants at all times. Maintain, clean, and organize work areas. Communicate effectively with coworkers, program participants, parents, volunteers, vendors and the public as needed. Assist in recruitment of volunteers. Record, maintain and report daily/weekly meal records. Record and maintain temperature of all food being served. Must adhere to program regulations. Serve meal components during designated hours. Perform facility and program set-ups and breakdowns. Perform other required duties as assigned. Must be at least 18 years of age. Relevant experience working with children and in food service is desirable. Must be available and attend SFSP and staff in-service training on June 10 and June 12, 2026 . Ability to lift 50 lbs. Ability to speak Spanish and l eadership experience is desired. Ability to understand community values, traditions, hierarchy structures and roles. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Display good customer services skills. Experience and Education Applicants must submit a copy of their high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent with application materials. Course work in college desired. Applicant must have a minimum of two (2) years of recreation experience working with the public. Applicant must have a general operating knowledge of a personal computer, calculator and other office machines necessary to carry out assigned duties.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Position requires prolonged standing, sitting, walking on level or unleveled surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. Incumbents may be required to lift, carry and/or push objects weighing 50 pounds or more. This position requires near and far vision for reading written documents and in the observation of participants during activities. Acute hearing is also required in providing customer service to public and /or assistance in facility, classroom, or outdoors. Will also be working in outdoor area, and may be exposed to loud noises and extreme weather conditions. Candidates must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License

  • City employees are registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles, Employee Pull Notice Program) Proof of car insurance (to be eligible for mileage reimbursement based on the IRS issued rates).
Candidates must possess, (within 30 days of hire) a current American Red Cross (ARC) or American Heart Association (AHA) Infant/Child/Adult CPR, Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), and Community First Aid and Safety certification. Online certifications not acceptable. Veteran's credit will amount to 10 points to be added to the interview score. Proof of honorable discharge must be submitted with the application materials in order to be eligible for veteran's credit. Veterans who wish to utilize this credit must have served on a full-time basis (not reserve or auxiliary) in the armed forces for a minimum of six months (180 days).
TESTING :
Candidates who pass all qualifying phases (minimum qualification review, written and/or oral examination) will advance to the hiring department who will have access to a pool of candidates to initiate the selection process.
