FITNESS INSTRUCTOR
Under limited supervision, the Fitness Instructor role provides support and leadership in all aspects of the Fitness program. They lead, instruct and motivate participants in group fitness classes, including cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and range of motion. They work with and provide modifications for people of all ages and skill levels. They are responsible for coaching participants through safe and effective exercise programming including motivating energetically, providing feedback, assessing strengths and weaknesses, clearly communicating and creating a community of wellness.Job Description:
FITNESS INSTRUCTOR ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaches a variety of group fitness classes such as indoor cycling, strength and cardio formats to participants of all ages from youth (ages 12+ to older adults). May also teach specialized formats based on qualifications. Provides a learning experience that is healthy, positive, enriching and emphasizes safety and the joy of movement. Instructs and educates patrons on safe and proper movement and equipment use, providing modifications and corrections as applicable. Creates classes where technique is clearly communicated, demonstrated, and progresses logically in interest and energy. Sets up equipment, maintains attendance sheets, and communicates with patrons. Takes proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe circumstances, and act accordingly to prevent accidents and injuries. Enforces rules, regulations, and policies; maintains safety, order and discipline of participants, and/or customers. Performs customer relations role which may include interacting with participants, program partners, and/or city staff to provide information and solve problems. Works as part of a team, attending training, orientation and/or staff meeting as needed and supports and subs for coworkers and arranges for substitutes if unable to teach. Shares in responsibility of creating a welcoming and fun environment in respect to safety, security, inclusion, stereo equipment maintenance, cleanliness, and temperature. Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the Fitness and Parks and Recreation programs including accurate completion of all required paperwork. Continues education in the field, maintains certification(s) and job knowledge to remain current with trends, teaching techniques and attends all in-house training and staff meetings. Knows and complies with all city and department policies; participating in professional trainings and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to city property immediately (within 24 hours).MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to stay actively engaged and assist with development of exercise skills. Ability to evaluate conditions in assigned areas and make judgments related to safety. Ability to understand and observe participant behavior and monitoring exertion levels. Ability to keep accurate records, organize information, and follow established procedures. Ability to tactfully and effectively communicate with participants, parents, & coordinators, with excellent customer service. Ability to collaborate with co-instructors about lesson plan ideas. Work closely with coordinators and fitness leads. Willingness to accept and provide feedback. Ability to commit to the agreed-upon schedule. Knowledge and strong understanding of fitness class instruction technique with the ability to provide feedback to participants while ensuring proper class management tactics. Knowledge and understanding of the importance of punctuality & consistency. Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction historyPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed. Bachelor's degree in exercise physiology, kinesiology, exercise science or related degree. Nationally recognized certification or training in addition to base certification. Four (4) or more years of experience in group fitness class instruction.REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Current group fitness certification from either: ACE, NSCA, AFAA, ACSM, AAAI/ISMA, NEDITA, ISSA, NASM, NFPT, IFPA, Certified Holistic Health and Well-Being Coach, Barre Certification, or an equivalent nationally recognized group fitness instruction certification. Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification. Three (3) years of customer service experience which includes experience in group fitness and class instruction.SUPERVISION

Physical and mental effort: Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permit the employee to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person. Sufficient vision or other powers of observation that permits the employee to review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents and materials. Sufficient manual dexterity that permits the employee to operate computer equipment and other office equipment. Ability to lift and carry up to 45 lbs. Ability to perform a wide range of strenuous physical and manual tasks in an outdoor environment. Physical ability to stand, walk, and kneel; hand/eye coordination to operate personal computer and office equipment. Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions.Working Environment:
Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment. Works in a setting subject to continuous interruptions and background noises. Requires schedule flexibility, occasionally working nights and weekends. May work in both indoor and outdoor environments that are oftentimes impacted by weather and at times, unpredictable conditions.Machines and Equipment Used:
Frequently uses various fitness and/or sports equipment as well as occasionally standard office equipment including computers, telephones, calculators and copy/fax machines.
