Job Description

Summary:
Teaches Pilates instruction and movement-based exercise techniques through private and group Pilates sessions as certified and directed. Greets and serves all members and their guests in a professional and pleasant manner and ensures a safe environment in all Pilates and fitness training areas. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following; Ensures a Health History Questionnaire is on file for any member or guest who intends to use Pilates services. Screens for risks and brings any concerns to the attention of the Director of Wellness for referral back to physician approval. Conducts private and group Pilates instruction utilizing mat, reformer and other Pilates apparatus as certified. Tailors Pilates programs designed individually to meet members' needs and in consideration of members' physical condition, goals and limitations. Performs fitness orientations, Pilates assessments, consultations and education in all aspects of Pilates training, flexibility, posture, core strength and healthy living habits. Provides limited nutritional counseling adhering to USDA Guidelines. Diets, weight loss regimes and supplements are to be avoided; any members seeking advanced help should be directed to the Director of Wellness for referral, or to planned programming under the supervision of a dietary professional. Enforces Fitness Center Rules and Spa policies and follows all aspects of job safety daily, including proper completion of Incident Report Forms. Learns member names and encourages and motivates members through positive reinforcement and professional instruction. Provides proper demonstration of Pilates exercises in form, tempo, alignment and range of motion. All aspects should be considered and respected when offering advice to avoid injury. Teaches proper breathing techniques, body awareness, posture, flexibility, core stabilization and movement patterns associated with Pilates instruction. Provides blood pressure and heart rate readings and offers education regarding the effects of exercise on both measurements as requested. All blood pressure readings at or over 180/90 require contacting Polo EMS. Knows and implements all emergency procedures including hurricane, inclement weather, fire, medical and security procedures as needed. Maintains accurate written records of all members and guests engaged in Pilates instruction who are assigned to you. Records should provide a chronological case history of Health History, Assessments, Blood Pressure, resting Heart Rate, program progression, individual exercises prescribed, equipment utilized, workloads, repetitions and any other relevant information shared by the member or guest. Ensures the safety of all members and guests in Pilates and fitness areas by proactively addressing potentially risky situations. All areas are to remain free of clutter and a circle of safety respected for every member and exercise performed. Safety is a top priority. Monitors and assists clients with proper positioning, alignment and technique correction when necessary. Monitors respiration, skin color, perspiration and other physical signs to ensure client safety. Shows regular attention to training schedules by utilizing the designated computer booking system. Informs all clients of the Training Cancellation Policy and obtains member signatures on chits for all services rendered. Conforms with and abides by all regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions specific to the Employee Handbook and Fitness Department Operations Manual. Functions as the "Trainer on Duty" and monitors fitness and Pilates areas for overall safety and customer service as scheduled by the Director of Wellness. Participates in all staff trainings, special events and fitness programs as planned by the Director of Wellness. Communicates with members, co-workers, management and the general public in a courteous and professional manner. Conforms with and abides by all regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions. Exhibits and maintains a professional demeanor to reflect a positive image of The Polo Club. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Wellness.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Requires broad knowledge of Pilates principles, techniques, equipment and proper applications. Certification in Pilates instruction required; reformer certification preferred. Must have excellent member service and interpersonal skills. Must be in excellent physical condition. Ability to prepare reports and maintain accurate records. Ability to verbally communicate effectively in English and in writing. Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions in English. Ability to interact professionally and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, co-workers and members. Must be able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment. Must have experience working with all ages, genders and fitness levels.

Qualifications:

Experience:
Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language Skills:
Ability to communicate well in English. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of members or employees of organization.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software; Spreadsheet software Internet software, Outlook and Fitness Center computer programs.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
First Aid, CPR, AED and Nationally recognized Personal Training, Pilates, or Group Exercise certification specific to areas of instruction.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, or crouch.
