Group Fitness Instructor Salary Range for Hiring (Dependent on Experience): $21.71 - $24.18 This salary applies specifically to time spent leading group fitness classes. For occasional additional responsibilities outside of class instruction, such as participating in meetings, training sessions, or mentoring during in-service hours, a different hourly pay rate will apply.

POSITION SUMMARY
The principal function of an employee in this class is to develop and implement group fitness classes. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of the Fitness Coordinator, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned Fitness Coordinator, Fitness Supervisor, other City employees, community and neighborhood organizations, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in a recreational and fitness environment- swimming pool setting.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Plans and leads, group fitness classes as scheduled. Maintains a safe environment for group fitness instruction including providing information, demonstration and assistance to customers regarding proper exercise techniques and including inspecting equipment for damage. Secures substitutes for scheduled classes when unable to cover. Maintains accurate records of equipment issues updating equipment log as necessary. Promotes special events for customers and community members, including implementing special events when necessary. Accurately documents class attendance numbers. Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of position. Fosters relationships with customers, coworkers, and others. Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions; review publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, certifications and new developments in assigned work areas. Assumes responsibility for other duties as required or assigned.

Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems. Responds to citizens' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner. Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities. Is punctual and timely in meeting requirements of performance, including attendance standards and work deadlines. Communicates information and states concerns in a clear and professional manner. Respects the opinion of others and demonstrates a reasonable relationship with employees, supervisors and others. Accepts and performs in a timely and effective manner changes in work assignments and/or how work is performed.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, & LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS
High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED) required. 1 plus years of experience in Group Fitness instruction or any combination of knowledge and experience or willingness to become trained. Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks and the ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology. Nationally recognized Group Fitness or Aquatic Fitness Certification. Specialty certifications required for Zumba, Yoga, Cycle, Pilates (others as deemed necessary by national organizations). CPR/AED certification with a hands-on skills assessment completed in person.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Some knowledge of safety principles, current practices and equipment related to the fitness class assigned. Some knowledge of principles for dealing with people of various ages and from various socio-economic groups. Some knowledge of human anatomy and physiological function as it relates to specific classes. Strong organizational skills. Physical ability to instruct a 1 to 1 ½ hour long fitness class. Ability to plan and instruct safe, motivating and effective group fitness classes. Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions. Ability to use initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines. General ability to understand and apply music phrasing. Ability to apply integrity, ingenuity, inventiveness, and empathy in the performance of assigned tasks.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The principal duties of this class are performed in a recreational and fitness environment in a swimming pool setting.
