Job Title:
Pharmacist Job Description This role provides comprehensive pharmacy services in a long-term care setting, ensuring safe, accurate, and timely medication preparation and dispensing. The pharmacist reviews and verifies prescriptions, compounds sterile and non-sterile medications, and supports nursing facility staff and prescribers with expert medication therapy guidance. This position also offers a potential future opportunity to move into a Pharmacist-in-Charge role for candidates with management experience. Responsibilities Review prescriptions issued by physicians or other authorized prescribers to verify accuracy, appropriateness, and completeness. Determine the correct formulas, ingredients, and dosage forms needed to prepare prescribed medications. Compound sterile and non-sterile medications using standard formulas and processes, including accurate weighing, measuring, and mixing of ingredients. Oversee and direct pharmacy staff engaged in mixing, packaging, and labeling medications, ensuring adherence to procedures and quality standards. Manage changes to prescription orders and ensure that all modifications are accurately documented and processed. Ensure accurate intake and verification of prescription orders and oversee the efficient fulfillment of medication orders. Dispense medications in accordance with legal, regulatory, and professional standards. Support and counsel nursing facility staff on the appropriate use, storage, and administration of prescription and over-the-counter medications. Advise physicians and other prescribers on medication therapy, including drug selection, dosing, interactions, and therapeutic alternatives. Provide education to nursing facility staff on general health topics such as diet, exercise, and stress management to support resident well-being. Offer information and guidance on related healthcare products, including durable medical equipment and home healthcare supplies. Coordinate and lead multiple pharmacy associates, providing clear direction and support to achieve operational goals. Utilize Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Windows-based software to document activities, manage information, and support pharmacy operations. Participate in rotating shifts and weekend coverage to ensure continuous pharmacy service. Engage in training and cross-coverage across different shifts to maintain consistent service quality. Essential Skills Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from an accredited college or school of pharmacy. Active Pharmacy License in the State of Minnesota. Demonstrated experience performing prescription verification and medication dispensing. Proficiency in compounding sterile and non-sterile medications using standard formulas and processes. Strong interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with pharmacy staff, nursing facility staff, and prescribers. Strong oral and written communication skills to provide clear counseling, education, and documentation. Proven leadership abilities to coordinate multiple associates and provide direction to accomplish pharmacy functions. Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Windows-based software programs. Experience working as a pharmacist in a long-term care pharmacy environment is preferred, but not required. Retail pharmacy experience and familiarity with retail pharmacy workflows are beneficial. Ability to manage prior authorizations and related pharmacy administrative processes. Additional Skills & Qualifications Interest in or experience with management responsibilities, with potential to move into a Pharmacist-in-Charge role after the contract period or shortly thereafter. Experience providing clinical counseling to nursing facility staff on prescription and over-the-counter medications. Background in advising on general health topics, including diet, exercise, and stress management. Experience supporting or advising on durable medical equipment and home healthcare supplies. Comfort working in both long-term care and retail pharmacy settings. Ability to adapt to rotating shifts and varying workloads in a fast-paced environment. Commitment to high standards of accuracy, safety, and regulatory compliance in all pharmacy operations. Work Environment This position is based in a long-term care pharmacy environment that operates on a rotating weekday and weekend schedule. The weekday schedule follows a Monday-Friday rotation, with shifts including 7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m., 9:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m., 10:30 a.m.-7:00 p.m., and 1:30 p.m.-10:00 p.m. Pharmacists working the closing shift may occasionally need to stay later to ensure the final run of orders is completed and delivered. Weekend coverage is shared, with pharmacists typically working one out of every five weekends. On assigned weekends, one schedule includes a 10:00 a.m.-6:30 p.m. shift, and another weekend schedule includes Saturday and Sunday coverage from 9:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. New hires participate in approximately four weeks of training, rotating through the different shifts to gain familiarity with all aspects of the operation. The pharmacy uses Windows-based software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as part of daily workflows. Once converted to permanent employment, there is a 90-day waiting period before eligibility for paid time off; during this period, time off may still be taken but is unpaid. The environment emphasizes accuracy, teamwork, and consistent service to long-term care facilities. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Eden Prairie, MN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $62.00 - $65.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
