Starting pay determined by employment history and interview What is compounding? Compounding is the art and science of crafting a unique dosage form custom tailored to an individual patient. Our compounding pharmacy uses USP grade pharmaceutical ingredients to create a wide variety of dosage forms for our human and veterinary patients including capsules, suspensions, topical preparations, mini tabs, otic and ophthalmic preparations, suppositories, troches and many others. Pharmacy technicians work meticulously, compounding prescriptions by weighing, mixing, grinding, levigating, encapsulating and performing other techniques and duties in our compounding lab. It is a perfect mix of a chemistry lab and retail pharmacy. We are a busy pharmacy, but unlike some retail pharmacies, our customers really appreciate what we do and they let us know about it (check out our reviews on Yelp and Google)! We do not bill insurance at our pharmacy which allows technicians to focus more on compounding. In addition to advanced compounding, our pharmacy offers qualified technicians with opportunities for advancing their skill sets in the areas of training, sterile compounding, processing, personnel management, customers service and others. Pharmacist Job Responsibilities at Northwest Compounders There are 2 primary functions a pharmacist at Northwest Compounders serves: Prescription Processing and Prescription Checking. Prescription processing encompasses all of the following: multitasking, answering phones, typing, restocking office supplies at your workstation, lifting items weighing up to 20 lbs., standing or sitting for the duration of your shift, processing prescriptions into our pharmacy software, providing patient consultation over the phone and in person, sending and receiving emails and faxes, building new formulas, researching new formulas and ingredients, troubleshooting difficult orders, providing excellent customer service, speaking with upset customers, working with upset customers to resolve issues, performing DUR in accordance with pharmacy law, keeping current on all CE and licensure requirements with the OBOP, operating ethically and legally at all times.. Prescription checking encompasses all of the following: checking every compound, and "pour" out for 100% accuracy; intermittent lifting of containers weighing up to 20lbs, standing in place (when not walking around the lab) for the entire duration of the shift (not including lunches and breaks), providing QS checks, volume checks, pH checks and all other midpoint functions of order fulfillment; verifying that shipping and billing are performed 100% correctly, holding technicians accountable by performing "write-ups" whenever an error is discovered in the checking process, verifying that the drug, dose and therapy are appropriate for the patient receiving the medication, placing completed prescriptions in the appropriate area (mail bin, NDE bin, will call, control safe, etc), lead by example in the lab: minimize personal conversations on the clock and keep technicians focused with polite reminders to stay on task when distractions occur.
Secondary functions:
Some pharmacists may also serve secondary functions such as direction of training, director of sterile operations, general operations manager, etc. Pharmacists holding these positions must schedule time to perform duties pertaining to their secondary function and must do so in a way that does not put a pinch on the staffing of the processing room. Generally speaking, time spent on secondary functions would be scheduled in advance and should not overlap with time that other pharmacists have scheduled to perform their secondary duties.
