POSITION SUMMARY
Director of Pharmacy Services plans, directs, and monitors financial, operational, professional, and programmatic activities of the pharmacy department. Implements Policies and Procedures that ensure the pharmacy department provides optimal pharmaceutical services that meet all legal, accreditation, and certification requirements. Ensures that all pharmacy staff is currently licensed/certified/registered and develops competence assessment programs that ensure all pharmacy staff performs all duties and responsibilities with utmost efficiency and safety, as well as, complies with all applicable policies, procedures and standards of the hospital. Keeps current with State regulations regarding the practice of Pharmacy and implements changes as necessary to maintain compliance. The position requires extensive contact with the administrator, medical staff, nursing service staff, hospital staff, and nonhospital contractors (vendors, auditors).
POSITION EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS
Graduate of an ACPE accredited School of Pharmacy with a BS Pharmacy degree or higher degree Currently licensed to practice pharmacy in State of Texas. Excellent customer service skills. Computer skills required with knowledge of Microsoft Office suite. Good written and verbal communication skills required. Bilingual
  • English/Spanish.
JOB KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE
Three to five years management experience in a health care setting preferred. Requires good communication and organizational skills. Must have ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Must have ability to speak effectively, and possesses strong reasoning ability and good independent judgment. Requires working with frequent interruptions. Ensures applicable CE records and licensure are maintained in department files. Attends management meetings. Sustains professional competency and promotes development through participation in inservices, workshops, seminars and professional organizations. Knowledge of government and insurance payers admission and billing regulations; Proven computer system and various software program experience. Demonstrated knowledge of operations and healthcare management; Nurse Practice Act, TJC and other local, state and federal regulations.
Responsibilities:
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Promotes the facility mission, vision and values by effectively communicating them to others. Considers mission, vision and values in developing services, standards and practices. Plan, direct and coordinate activities involved in the preparation and dispensing of drugs and other pharmaceutical supplies to fill written medication and prescription requests issued by physicians and other qualified prescribers. Develops and maintains policies, procedures and processes that promote safe, efficient and cost-effective medication use and that comply with federal, state and local regulatory and accrediting agencies. Supervises pharmacy personnel. Recruits, promotes, disciplines and terminates pharmacy staff. Supervises drug storage and preparation areas throughout the hospital. Develops implements and maintains a program that improves the quality of pharmacy services and supports the quality improvement plan of the organization. Prepares work schedules and monitors workload statistics. Maintains an appropriate staffing level. Ensures compliance with hospital policies and procedures that apply to pharmacy services. Ensures compliance with all applicable Federal, State and local laws, rules and regulations pertaining to the dispensing of drugs and narcotics and the maintenance of required records. Provides for the educational needs of the pharmacy staff. Ensures maintenance of an adequate drug supply. Ensures the integrity of the drug supply. Establishes specifications for the procurement of drugs, chemicals and biologicals. Ensures strict control and accountability for drugs dispensed to patients or distributed to floor stock and ensure that patient billing is accurate. Reports to the CEO and will be responsible to function as a pharmacist as well as direct, coordinate and manage all activities and functions of the pharmacy. Must have strong working knowledge of JACHO, HCAPS, and other regulatory requirements and have ability to develop, implement, teach, track and monitor policies and procedures. Monitors standard daily, monthly and annual performance reporting of established Key Performance Indicators taking corrective action as necessary. Responsible for developing and monitoring the annual departmental budgets for areas of responsibility. Provides feedback and coaching to staff so as to clearly define expectations and priorities. Insures timely completion of evaluations for the Patient Access Team and submission to HR. Monitors and signing off on Kronos in absence of Supervisor to ensure payroll rules are compliant and staff is paid appropriately. Is responsible for ensuring daily reports are complete accurate and timely within established standards. Maintains working knowledge in all areas of responsibility to assist in any capacity needed in daily operations. Works cooperatively with Patient Accounts, HIM Department, Case Management and all appropriate departments in matters affecting Patient Account resolutions. Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:
The individual spends over 95% of his/her time in an air-conditioned environment with varying exposures to noise. There is protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The position does have low exposure to malodorous, infectious body fluids from patients and some minimal exposure to noxious smells from cleansing agents. C.
Occupational Exposure:
This position has minimal to no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues and is an OSHA Category III (although situations can be imagined or hypothesized under which anyone, anywhere, might encounter potential exposure to body fluids). Person who performs these duties are not called upon as part of their employment to perform or assist in emergency medical care or first aid or to be potentially exposed in some other way. D.
