Key Responsibilities Assist pharmacists with preparing and dispensing prescription medications. Accurately enter prescription information into pharmacy computer systems. Label, package, and organize medications for patient pickup. Process insurance claims and verify patient information. Provide customer service by answering questions and directing patients to the pharmacist when necessary. Maintain inventory by stocking shelves, ordering medications, and checking expiration dates. Follow all safety procedures and regulations set by the Food and Drug Administration and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Maintain patient confidentiality according to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Keep the pharmacy workspace clean and organized. Skills Core Technical Skills Medication preparation and dispensing Understanding of prescription terminology (SIG codes) Knowledge of dosage calculations and measurements Inventory management and stock rotation Familiarity with pharmacy software (e.g., dispensing systems, EHRs) Insurance claim processing and billing basics Attention to Detail Accuracy in filling prescriptions Ability to spot discrepancies or potential errors Careful labeling and documentation Customer Service Skills Communicating clearly with patients Handling questions about prescriptions (within scope) Managing difficult or sensitive interactions professionally Regulatory & Safety Knowledge Understanding of HIPAA/privacy laws Knowledge of pharmacy laws and regulations Proper handling of controlled substances Infection control and safety procedures Organizational Skills Managing multiple prescriptions at once Prioritizing urgent vs. routine tasks Keeping workspaces clean and compliant Communication & Teamwork Coordinating with pharmacists and healthcare providers Clear verbal and written communication Working efficiently in a team environment Problem-Solving Skills Resolving insurance issues or rejected claims Handling out-of-stock medications Identifying workflow inefficiencies Basic Administrative Skills Data entry and record keeping Cash handling / point-of-sale systems Scheduling and phone management
