A certified Community Pharmacy Technician II is a healthcare employee that performs specific job responsibilities under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist. They must have an active certification with the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. They are responsible for providing pharmacy services, including, but not limited to distributing pharmaceuticals, performing inventory control, providing customer service and maintaining pharmacy records. The Community Pharmacy Technician II works as a part of an interdisciplinary patient care team, and under the direction of the Community Pharmacy Technician Supervisor. They may assist in the training of staff under the direction and guidance of the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor and/or designee. The Community Pharmacy Technician II will utilize and extend knowledge and competency while performing technical pharmacy functions of the Community Pharmacy.Responsibilities:
1. Medication Preparation and Distribution - Replenishes medication, follows departmental standards to ensure secure delivery of narcotics and controlled substances. Interprets and enters electronic and hand-written prescriptions. Ensures patient specific labels are correct regarding medication, dose, dosage forms, package size and instructions. Delivers medications to patient care areas accurately and timely when needed. Ensure medications prepared for distribution are dispensed under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist. 2. Community Pharmacy Intake - Responsible for patient drop off for new prescriptions, refills, electronic prescription processing, answering phones, meeting the needs of the patients at the counter and addressing any care manager or nurse requests for prescriptions for patient discharge in a timely manner. The intake process is the first line of contact for ensuring a positive interaction with all patients and staff within the Community setting. The technician is responsible for the accuracy of patient demographics, allergies, insurance and prescription processing. Ability to multitask and navigate within the assigned systems, such as EPIC and POS. 3. Pharmacy Information Systems - Maintain competency in technician functions of the pharmacy information system. Maintain competency with the retrieving and reviewing of patients' physician orders via electronic and scanned hard copies of prescriptions. 4. Pharmacy Billing - Processes medical insurance claims for medications when patients choose to use insurance for their prescriptions. May require contacting insurance company to verify coverage, running the medication through the patient's insurance and updating the insurance coverage in the pharmacy system. May process rejections of prescription medicines by a patient's health insurance company and collaborate with the pharmacist and prescriber to formulate a solution, such as prescribing an alternative medicine or finding discounts. 5. Medication Replenishment Responsibilities - Assists in the ordering, receiving unpacking and storing of pharmaceuticals in appropriate storage locations. Assists in the reordering of medication when needed. Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration date. Identifies and replaces outdates and/or unusable drugs. Performs return procedures and shelf cleaning for assigned areas for both prescription and over the counter products every 30 days as assigned by supervisor. Returns medications to their appropriate stock locations. 6. Assisting with Training and Education - Participates in on-the-job training of new pharmacy personnel including pharmacy technicians, students and pharmacists. Participates in the technician responsibilities as outlined in the Meds to Beds policy for the Community Pharmacy department. Participates in the ongoing educational activities to acquire and validate knowledge. Participates in the review of pharmacy services with student interns from pharmacy school or pharmacy technician programs as well as PGY1 residents. 7. Performance Improvement - Participates in performance improvement activities including refrigerator and freezer temperature checks, monthly medication/over the counter expiration inspections, and 10-day ready prescriptions not picked up to ensure they are credited back to all third-party payers and medications are properly returned. Adheres to regulatory standards as set forth by JCAHO, HIPAA, ACHC and State Board of Pharmacy. Presents new processes and procedures to the pharmacy staff. 8. Cash Handling and Register Functions - Performs financial transactions according to the POS. Adheres to POS cash register opening and closing procedures to ensure registers are balanced and deposits and paperwork are accurate. Ability to process cash and credit card, as well as, payroll deduction transactions. 9. All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.
