Job Title:
Pharmacy Technician / Fulfillment Technician Job Description This role supports licensed pharmacists in both prescription processing and physical fulfillment activities within a high‑volume, specialty pharmacy environment. You will enter, process, and manage drug therapy orders; assist with interpreting and dispensing prescriptions; maintain accurate patient and pharmacy records; and help ensure timely, accurate picking, labeling, packing, and shipping of medications. The position is highly collaborative, call‑center oriented, and designed to be cross‑functional, allowing you to flex between pharmacy technician and fulfillment technician responsibilities as business needs evolve. Responsibilities Assist pharmacists with the practice of pharmacy in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations, HIPAA guidelines, and internal policies and procedures. Accurately interpret healthcare providers' prescription orders and enter them into the core pharmacy system. Identify incomplete or incorrect prescription information and notify the prescribing provider to obtain clarification or corrections within the legal limits of pharmacy technician authority. Perform physician outreach when appropriate to obtain accurate verbal orders for product replacement and missing prescription information. Manage patient adherence processes, including scheduling medication deliveries in line with pharmacy guidelines. Assist patients with treatment compliance by entering or updating current medications, allergies, and medical conditions in the system. Triage patient calls to nursing staff and/or pharmacists when clinical intervention or additional support is needed. Use internal systems and web‑based tools to communicate with health insurance payors and providers, investigate benefits, and transmit test claims to verify prescription coverage when applicable. Identify and recommend process and system improvements that increase efficiency and productivity in pharmacy operations, and communicate ideas to supervisors and leads. Interact professionally and efficiently with internal and external teams to ensure accurate and timely provision of services to patients. Collaborate with team leads, supervisors, and other personnel to determine objectives and support changing business priorities. Handle inbound and outbound calls related to prescriptions, benefits, adherence, and order status in a call‑center environment. Prioritize work effectively to manage a high volume of cases and calls while maintaining quality and compliance. Organize and participate in testing activities as required by the business to support new processes, systems, or services. Assist pharmacists in the fulfillment of prescription orders by accurately picking, labeling, packing, and shipping medications and related commodities. Collaborate with inventory planning personnel to manage medication and commodity inventory levels needed for fulfillment operations. Assist in restocking supplies and commodities used during pick, pack, and ship activities. Meet predefined performance standards, metrics, and key performance indicators related to accuracy, productivity, call handling, and fulfillment timelines. Develop a deep understanding of all aspects of the fulfillment technician role and serve as a resource for pharmacy technicians and fulfillment team leads. Promote a positive, collaborative culture by modeling supportive behavior, volunteering for overtime when appropriate, learning new tasks, and going above and beyond in daily responsibilities. Maintain current Illinois Certified Pharmacy Technician licensure and complete continuing education requirements as necessary. Support cross‑functional initiatives by flexing between pharmacy technician and fulfillment technician tasks as needed to meet patient and business needs. Contribute to a unified pharmacy team by collaborating across functions and supporting colleagues in both prescription processing and fulfillment workflows. Ensure high‑quality customer service and professional communication with patients, healthcare providers, and internal stakeholders. Maintain accurate and compliant documentation of prescription data, medical records handling, and operational activities. Adhere to deadlines, manage time effectively, and complete individual tasks while working collaboratively across functions. Essential Skills Active Certified Pharmacy Technician license in the state of Illinois, with current compliance with licensure and continuing education requirements. Illinois pharmacy license, with certification obtained within the legally allowed 2‑year window; preference for candidates who already hold both license and certification. A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a specialty pharmacy, retail or mail order pharmacy, pharmacy benefit manager (PBM), or healthcare provider setting. Experience with prescription data entry and medical record handling and documentation. Strong attention to detail and ability to make high‑quality decisions under general supervision. Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a high‑volume, customer service or call‑center environment. Comfort handling approximately 30-40 calls per day with an average handle time of 8-9 minutes and 3-5 minutes of after‑call work. High‑quality customer service skills and professional, clear communication with patients and healthcare professionals. Strong core knowledge of medical and pharmacy benefits and familiarity with insurance processes. Experience using online verification systems or similar tools to verify benefits and coverage. Strong computer skills, including accurate data entry and proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel. Ability to express ideas clearly in both written and oral communication. Ability to manage time effectively, adhere to deadlines, and complete individual tasks while working collaboratively. Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Professionalism in interviews and workplace interactions, including reliability and strong work ethic. Willingness to work onsite and commute to the pharmacy location as required. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in a specialty pharmacy or call‑center‑heavy pharmacy environment is highly beneficial. Experience in retail pharmacy, mail order pharmacy, PBM, or healthcare provider settings is acceptable and valued. Experience with high‑volume call handling, including efficient wrap‑up and rapid movement to the next call. Familiarity with on‑line benefit verification and test claims submission tools. Demonstrated ability to collaborate in cross‑functional teams and support a unified pharmacy and fulfillment operation. Experience in environments where performance metrics and KPIs are used to guide productivity and quality. Comfort working in a structured, process‑driven environment with evolving business priorities. Proactive mindset, including volunteering for overtime, learning new tasks, and seeking opportunities to expand skills. Ability to adapt from fulfillment tasks to pharmacy technician responsibilities as cross‑training opportunities arise. Strong interpersonal skills and a team‑oriented approach that supports a collaborative culture. Interest in long‑term opportunities with potential for contract extensions and conversion to permanent roles. Work Environment This role is based onsite in a pharmacy space located within a corporate headquarters environment. You will work in a high‑volume, specialty pharmacy and fulfillment setting that combines call‑center operations with physical prescription fulfillment. The schedule requires flexibility to work between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., with potential opportunities for overtime based on business needs. The environment is technology‑driven, utilizing core pharmacy systems, online verification tools, and standard office software such as Microsoft Word and Excel. You will spend a significant portion of your time handling inbound and outbound calls, performing data entry, and updating patient and prescription records, as well as working in fulfillment areas to pick, label, pack, and ship medications. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of North Chicago, IL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.05 - $27.00/hr.
