Pharmacy Technician / Fulfillment Technician Job Description This role combines pharmacy technician and fulfillment technician responsibilities to support safe, accurate, and timely prescription processing and order fulfillment in a high-volume specialty pharmacy environment. You will assist pharmacists with entering, processing, and managing drug therapy orders, interpreting and dispensing prescriptions, maintaining patient and pharmacy records, and supporting patients with medication access and adherence. You will also support the end-to-end fulfillment workflow, including picking, labeling, packing, and shipping medications, while collaborating closely with team leads and leadership to meet performance, quality, and patient service expectations. The position offers the opportunity to become a subject matter expert across pharmacy operations and fulfillment, contributing to a cross-functional, collaborative team culture. Responsibilities + Support pharmacists in the practice of pharmacy in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations, HIPAA guidelines, and corporate policies and procedures. + Accurately interpret healthcare providers' prescription orders and enter them into the core pharmacy system. + Notify prescribers of incomplete or incorrect prescription information and perform appropriate outreach within the legal limits of pharmacy technician authority. + Assist pharmacists in obtaining accurate verbal orders for product replacement and obtain missing prescription information from healthcare providers. + Manage patient adherence processes, including scheduling medication deliveries in alignment with pharmacy guidelines when needed. + Assist patients with treatment compliance by entering and updating current medications, allergies, and medical conditions in the system. + Triage patient calls to nursing staff and/or pharmacists when clinical support or escalation is required. + Use internal systems and web-based tools to communicate with health insurance payors and providers to investigate benefits and verify prescription coverage, including transmitting test claims when applicable. + Identify and recommend process and system improvements that increase efficiency and productivity across pharmacy operations, and communicate these ideas to supervisors and leadership. + Interact professionally and efficiently with internal and external teams to ensure accurate and timely provision of services to patients. + Collaborate with necessary personnel to determine objectives and support changing business priorities by executing or overseeing specific tasks related to patients, products, or services. + Handle inbound and outbound calls in a call-heavy environment, managing prescription inquiries, case updates, and related communications with patients and healthcare providers. + Prioritize work effectively, organize tasks, and perform testing or other assigned activities as business needs require. + Assist pharmacists with fulfillment activities, including picking, labeling, packing, and shipping prescription orders. + Collaborate with inventory planning personnel to manage medication and commodity inventory levels. + Assist in restocking commodities used in pick, pack, and ship operations to ensure continuous workflow. + Meet predefined performance standards, metrics, and key performance indicators (KPIs) for both pharmacy processing and fulfillment activities. + Develop a deep understanding of all aspects of the fulfillment technician role and serve as a resource for pharmacy technicians and fulfillment team leads when needed. + Participate in cross-functional support, flexing between pharmacy technician and fulfillment responsibilities as business needs evolve. + Maintain current Illinois Certified Pharmacy Technician licensure and complete required continuing education (CE) to remain in compliance. + Promote a positive, collaborative culture and contribute to a supportive team environment. + Demonstrate strong professionalism during all patient, provider, and internal interactions, including phone and written communications. + Handle medical record documentation and prescription data entry with accuracy and confidentiality. + Provide high-quality customer service and inter-professional communication with healthcare providers and colleagues. + Use online verification systems or similar tools to confirm insurance benefits and coverage when applicable. + Complete individual tasks independently while collaborating effectively across functions and adhering to deadlines. + Perform accurate data entry and documentation in pharmacy systems and related software applications. + Support project tasks and day-to-day operational activities as assigned by management, including special initiatives and process testing. + Maintain flexibility to support overtime and additional duties as needed to meet patient and business demands. Essential Skills + Illinois pharmacy technician license, with certification obtained within the required timeframe; preference for candidates who already hold both license and certification. + A minimum of 1 year of experience in a specialty pharmacy, retail pharmacy, mail order pharmacy, pharmacy benefit manager ( PBM ), or healthcare provider setting. + Experience with prescription data entry and medical record handling and documentation. + Strong attention to detail and the ability to make high-quality decisions under general supervision. + Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a high-volume, customer service or call-center environment. + Comfort handling approximately 30-40 calls per day with target average handle times of 8-9 minutes and 3-5 minutes of after-call work. + Strong core knowledge of medical and pharmacy benefits and insurance processes. + Familiarity with online verification systems or similar insurance verification tools. + Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with healthcare professionals, patients, and internal teams in both written and oral formats. + Proven ability to multitask, manage time effectively, and adhere to deadlines in a fast-paced setting. + Strong computer skills, including accurate data entry and proficiency with applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel. + Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. + Professionalism in interviews and on the job, including reliability, punctuality, and appropriate communication. + Willingness to work onsite and commute to the pharmacy location as required. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Experience in specialty pharmacy or a strong experience in call center environments is highly beneficial. + Experience in retail, mail order, or other pharmacy settings is acceptable and valued. + Understanding of the unique demands of a call-heavy pharmacy role, including rapid task switching and consistent call quality. + Ability to efficiently wrap up calls and transition quickly to the next task or patient interaction. + Demonstrated ability to collaborate in cross-functional teams and support both pharmacy and fulfillment workflows. + Experience with benefits investigation, test claim submission, and coordination with payors and providers. + Demonstrated initiative, including volunteering for overtime, learning new tasks, and going above and beyond standard duties. + Interest in growing into broader responsibilities and potential conversion to a permanent role based on performance. + Ability to identify operational or system issues and propose practical improvements. + Comfort working with performance metrics and KPIs and using them to guide daily work. + Strong interpersonal skills and a team-oriented mindset, contributing positively to a sup To view full details and how to apply, please login or create a Job Seeker account
