Job Title:
Phlebotomist II Job Description The Phlebotomist II supports a high-volume clinical laboratory by performing blood draws and specimen collection, ensuring accurate specimen processing, and maintaining strict compliance with laboratory procedures and safety regulations. This role combines hands-on patient care with technical laboratory responsibilities, including troubleshooting, training support, and recommending workflow improvements in a fast-paced environment. Responsibilities Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a high-volume setting. Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and test requirements. Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients, including those who may be nervous or anxious. Match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes with 100% accuracy. Accurately label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens according to specific test orders and laboratory protocols. Package specimens for transport and maintain specimen integrity by following temperature control and handling requirements. Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory standards. Update patient information accurately in electronic systems, including EMR and LIS platforms. Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders related to laboratory testing and specimen requirements. Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable laboratory safety procedures. Attend and complete annual department trainings and other required compliance education. Answer telephone calls professionally, relay laboratory results as appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a timely manner. Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, and workflow, and make recommendations to improve efficiency. Provide courteous, patient-focused service and maintain a professional demeanor in all interactions. Essential Skills Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required. Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. High school diploma or
GED. 2-4
years of overall experience in a clinical, laboratory, or related healthcare environment. Proficiency in venipuncture using both straight needles and butterfly needles. Demonstrated experience in blood draws and specimen collection in high-volume settings. Strong skills in accurate specimen handling, including labeling, matching requisitions, and maintaining proper storage and temperature control. Ability to operate a centrifuge and perform centrifuging procedures safely and correctly. Knowledge of laboratory safety practices and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Experience using EMR systems and LIS systems for patient and specimen data entry. Strong attention to detail with a commitment to 100% accuracy in matching requisitions to specimens. Ability to work independently and manage tasks in a fast-paced environment. Comfort communicating clearly with patients, explaining procedures, and providing courteous patient interaction and customer service. Comfortable answering phones and relaying lab results when appropriate. Reliable, consistent work habits and strong sense of responsibility. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working in a hospital or high-volume laboratory setting. Experience with pediatric specimen collection and patient interaction. Familiarity with urine and fecal specimen collection procedures. Understanding of laboratory workflows and the ability to assist with troubleshooting and workflow optimization. Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks. Willingness to learn new procedures, adapt to updated protocols, and participate in ongoing training. Effective verbal communication skills and a courteous, professional phone manner. Demonstrated commitment to patient care, confidentiality, and quality standards. Work Environment This role is based in a professional clinical laboratory environment with exposure to high-volume lab operations and a wide range of specimen types. You will work with standard phlebotomy and laboratory equipment, including needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and computer systems such as EMR and LIS platforms. The setting is fast paced and detail oriented, requiring consistent adherence to safety protocols, specimen handling procedures, and regulatory standards. Team members gain hands-on clinical experience, regular training, and exposure to complex laboratory workflows, with potential for long-term opportunities and professional growth. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Napa, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $25.00/hr.
