Job Title:
Phlebotomist Job Description This Phlebotomist role focuses on collecting high-quality specimens from patients of all age groups, with a strong emphasis on pediatric and inpatient hospital populations. You will perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection, support laboratory processing and testing workflows, and help maintain strict compliance with safety and quality standards. The position also offers opportunities to assist with training and orientation of patient service technicians while working as part of a collaborative hospital laboratory team. Responsibilities Collect blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary techniques from patients of all age groups, including pediatric, infant, and neonatal patients. Perform pediatric and difficult blood draws, including patients in medical office buildings and inpatient hospital units. Review and verify test orders for accuracy and completeness before specimen collection. Draw and label samples accurately, ensuring proper patient identification and specimen integrity. Process specimens for laboratory testing, including basic sample handling and preparation as needed. Support blood bank-related specimen collection and handling according to established protocols. Apply and follow quality control (QC) rules and procedures in all aspects of specimen collection and processing. Troubleshoot analyzers and related laboratory equipment within scope of practice, escalating issues appropriately. Maintain a comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety requirements and consistently follow all safety protocols. Communicate the importance of compliance and safety to other staff members and model safe work practices. Provide orientation and on-the-job training for patient service technicians as needed. Use the laboratory information system and related computer systems to enter, track, and manage orders and results. Deliver professional, courteous customer service to patients, families, and clinical staff. Work under the supervision of the lab supervisor and team lead, collaborating closely with the broader lab team. Manage a high-volume workload in an inpatient hospital setting, drawing approximately 20-30 patients per shift. Maintain accurate documentation and records related to specimen collection, processing, and testing support. Adapt to a float pool environment, covering various shifts and units based on operational needs. Essential Skills Proficiency in blood collection by venipuncture and capillary technique from patients of all age groups. Demonstrated experience with pediatric blood collections, including infant draw and neonatal experience. Ability to perform difficult blood draws, including patients in medical office buildings and inpatient settings. At least six months of experience in an acute or sub-acute hospital setting, with a preference for one year of experience. Experience working in an inpatient hospital environment and ability to draw 20-30 patients within a shift. High school diploma or equivalent. Current CPT 1 license. Strong computer skills and experience using a laboratory information system (such as Cerner or similar). Knowledge of blood bank specimen handling and related procedures. Ability to troubleshoot analyzers within scope of practice. Understanding and application of quality control (QC) rules in the laboratory setting. Comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety standards in a clinical laboratory environment. Customer service skills with the ability to interact professionally with patients, families, and clinical staff. Open availability to work various shifts, including PM and overnight (NOC) shifts, with possible AM shifts. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in a hospital-based clinical laboratory setting, including support for lab testing processes. Previous experience in a blood bank environment. Ability and willingness to assist with training and orientation of patient service technicians. Comfort working in a float pool role, adapting to different units and schedules as needed. Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen labeling, documentation, and data entry. Effective communication skills to work collaboratively with supervisors, team leads, and multidisciplinary teams. Ability to manage time effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume inpatient environment. Work Environment This role is based in an inpatient hospital setting, working within a clinical laboratory and on various patient care units. You will function as part of a registry float pool primarily covering paid time off and leave, with assignments scheduled in advance. Shifts may include AM, PM, and overnight (NOC) schedules, with open float positions that provide coverage as needed and some periods of full-time hours for training and orientation. The schedule is typically posted four weeks in advance. Initial training includes full-time hours to become acclimated to the facility, with potential involvement in specimen processing and hands-on training on the overnight shift. The environment is fast-paced and patient-focused, with frequent interaction with pediatric and adult patients, nursing staff, and other clinical teams. Work is computer-based for order entry and results tracking, using a laboratory information system such as Cerner or similar platforms. The laboratory follows strict safety, infection control, and quality control procedures, and staff are expected to maintain professional attire appropriate for a hospital and laboratory setting. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of San Bernardino, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $26.00/hr.
