Job Title:
Phlebotomist Job Description The Phlebotomist collects high-quality blood specimens from patients of all ages using venipuncture and capillary techniques, with a strong emphasis on pediatric and difficult draws. This role includes reviewing test orders, drawing and processing specimens, packaging samples for laboratory testing, and supporting additional laboratory procedures as needed. The Phlebotomist upholds strict safety and compliance standards, delivers excellent customer service, and may assist with orienting and training patient service technicians. Responsibilities Collect blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary techniques from patients across all age groups, including infants, children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. Perform pediatric blood collections and infant/neonatal draws with confidence and care, following all safety and comfort protocols. Handle difficult blood draws, including patients in medical office buildings and higher-acuity settings, while maintaining professionalism and accuracy. Review test orders carefully to ensure correct patient identification, appropriate tests, and proper specimen collection requirements. Draw samples efficiently and accurately, meeting expected volume targets in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Process specimens according to laboratory protocols, including labeling, handling, and packaging samples for transport and testing. Use the laboratory information system and related computer applications to enter, verify, and track specimens and orders. Apply a comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety standards and consistently follow all regulatory and facility guidelines. Communicate the importance of safety, infection control, and compliance to colleagues and support a culture of best practices in the lab. Collaborate with the lab supervisor, team lead, and other staff while working with pediatric patients under appropriate supervision. Maintain excellent attendance, punctuality, and professional behavior to support reliable lab operations and patient care. Adapt to working in a float pool across multiple facilities, adjusting to different units, workflows, and patient volumes. Support additional lab-related tasks as assigned, including assisting with specimen processing during training or as needed. Follow established schedules and shift assignments, including on-call coverage for leaves of absence and vacations. Essential Skills Proficiency in blood collection by venipuncture and capillary technique from patients of all age groups. Demonstrated experience with pediatric blood collections, including infant and neonatal draws. Proven ability to perform difficult blood draws in acute, sub-acute, and outpatient settings. Comprehensive understanding of laboratory compliance and safety standards. High school diploma (HS Diploma). Current CPT 1 License. Phlebotomy certification. At least six months of phlebotomy experience in an acute or sub-acute setting, with a preference for one year of experience. Experience in an inpatient hospital setting, with the ability to draw approximately 20-30 patients within an 8-hour shift. Strong computer skills and experience using a laboratory information system (for example, Cerner or similar). Customer service skills and the ability to interact professionally and compassionately with patients and staff. Reliable attendance and a strong record of professional behavior. Well-developed venipuncture skills and phlebotomy knowledge, with the ability to perform independently without basic phlebotomy training. Additional Skills & Qualifications Ability to follow a schedule released several weeks in advance and to accept on-call assignments as required. Work Environment This position supports various units and patient populations, including pediatrics. Shift is afternoon shifts into the evening, with full-time hours initially to become acclimated to the facility, workflows, and equipment, and may include hands-on experience with specimen processing. The role operates in a clinical laboratory and patient care environment that requires frequent movement between patient rooms, outpatient draw stations, and lab areas. Phlebotomists use laboratory information systems (such as Cerner or similar), standard phlebotomy equipment, and specimen processing tools. The schedule is typically planned four weeks in advance, with current needs on an on-call basis to cover leaves of absence and vacations, and this arrangement may change over time. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of San Bernardino, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $27.00/hr.
