Job Title:
Phlebotomist II Job Description The Phlebotomist II supports a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment by performing high-quality specimen collection, processing, and documentation. This role assists with troubleshooting, training, and recommending workflow improvements while ensuring accurate, safe, and timely handling of all specimens in accordance with established procedures and regulatory standards. Responsibilities Perform blood draws using approved venipuncture techniques, including straight needles and butterfly needles, in a safe, efficient, and professional manner. Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures, such as urine or fecal collection, to patients to ensure understanding and comfort. Collect and store specimens according to established procedures and protocols to maintain specimen integrity. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes accurately and verify that all patient and test information is complete and correct. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, following all outlined procedures. Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy before processing. Package specimens for transport, following required procedures and protocols to maintain specimen stability and integrity. Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling. Follow different handling and transport procedures as outlined by specific protocols to ensure compliance and quality. Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as needed to support a safe and compliant laboratory environment. Update patient information and related records accurately in the system to support reliable test processing and reporting. Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders to ensure the correct tests are performed and processed. Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory requirements in daily work. Attend annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures, safety standards, and best practices. Answer telephone calls promptly and professionally, and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries as appropriate. Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, labeling, or processing and recommend workflow improvements to enhance efficiency. Support training efforts by demonstrating proper techniques and reinforcing adherence to established protocols. Essential Skills Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required. Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. High school diploma or
GED. 2-4
years of overall experience in a related medical or laboratory environment. Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy and blood draw techniques, including venipuncture using straight and butterfly needles. Experience in medical laboratory settings with sample processing responsibilities. Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test requirements. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and reporting. Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate matching of requisitions to specimen tubes and correct test ordering. Ability to understand and follow physicians' orders and laboratory protocols. Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and ability to comply with safety and regulatory requirements. Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures to patients and respond to inquiries. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous experience in a medical laboratory environment performing sample processing and handling. Familiarity with medical lab workflows and fast-paced clinical operations. Comfort working with multiple types of specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples. Ability to assist with training and workflow recommendations to improve efficiency and quality. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimens and tasks simultaneously. Customer service mindset with a courteous and professional approach to patient interactions. Work Environment This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting that requires consistent attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols. You will work with medical laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and specimen storage systems, as well as computer systems and the Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and reporting. The position involves frequent interaction with patients, clinical staff, and laboratory personnel, along with regular handling of blood and other biological specimens. You will follow established procedures for specimen collection, processing, packaging, and transport, while complying with OSHA and DEP regulations. The environment emphasizes continuous learning through annual department trainings and a strong focus on safety, accuracy, and quality in all aspects of work. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Orange Park, FL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $23.00/hr.
