Job Title:
Phlebotomist Job Description This inpatient Phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection in a hospital laboratory setting. You will collect, process, and store specimens, ensure accurate labeling and documentation, and support safe, efficient laboratory operations while delivering compassionate care to patients, including pediatric patients. Responsibilities Perform venipuncture blood draws and other specimen collections, including urine and fecal samples, in an inpatient hospital setting. Demonstrate proficiency with straight needles and butterfly needles to safely and effectively collect blood specimens from patients, including pediatric patients. Collect and store specimens according to established laboratory protocols and test requirements. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate patient and test identification. Label specimen tubes clearly and accurately, including split and centrifuged samples, following laboratory standards. Centrifuge specimens as required, ensuring proper handling, timing, and equipment use to maintain specimen integrity. Freeze specimens as required by specific tests and maintain required temperatures for each specimen type. Place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes and follow detailed procedures for transport to preserve specimen quality. Record data accurately in laboratory systems and maintain thorough documentation for all specimens collected and processed. Update patient information and ensure all records reflect correct and current data. Understand and interpret laboratory orders, physicians' orders, and blood work orders to ensure correct tests are performed. Follow established decontamination procedures to maintain a clean and safe work area. Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and adhere to all safety and infection control protocols. Collaborate with the hospital lab team to support timely and accurate test processing and patient care. Essential Skills At least 1 year of phlebotomy experience in a clinical, laboratory, or hospital setting. Minimum of 6 months of pediatric phlebotomy experience, including comfort and proficiency working with children. Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture techniques, including straight needles and butterfly needles. Experience with medical lab draws and specimen processing in a lab or hospital lab environment. Ability to understand and follow laboratory orders, physicians' orders, and blood work orders accurately. Strong attention to detail in matching requisition forms to specimen tubes and labeling specimens correctly. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for data entry, documentation, and basic reporting. High School Diploma or GED. Knowledge of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and safety standards. Ability to follow detailed protocols for specimen collection, centrifugation, freezing, storage, and transport. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous experience working on a hospital lab team or in an inpatient phlebotomy role. Comfort working with a wide range of patient populations, including pediatric patients. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple specimen collections and tasks during a shift. Effective communication skills to interact professionally with patients, nurses, physicians, and laboratory staff. Ability to maintain composure and accuracy in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment. Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and adhering to all privacy and compliance standards. Work Environment This role is part of an inpatient hospital laboratory team, working closely with other phlebotomists, laboratory professionals, and clinical staff. You will work in a clinical environment that involves regular interaction with patients, including pediatric patients, and frequent movement between patient rooms and the laboratory. The position follows an overnight schedule from 12:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, with Thursday, Friday, and Saturday off. The work involves handling blood and other biological specimens, using centrifuges and other standard laboratory equipment, and following strict safety, infection control, and regulatory protocols. Professional clinical attire appropriate for a hospital setting is expected. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Pensacola, FL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $22.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
