Job Description

NATURE OF WORK
Fairfield Memorial Hospital is seeking a skilled, patient‑focused Laboratory Phlebotomist to support the daily operations of the FMH Laboratory. This role is essential in delivering high‑quality diagnostic services by performing accurate blood collection, specimen processing, and related laboratory support functions. The Laboratory Phlebotomist interacts directly with patients across all age groups and plays a key role in ensuring a positive, professional experience during the specimen collection process. In addition to specimen collection, the Laboratory Phlebotomist collaborates closely with clinical staff to maintain efficient workflows, ensure timely order entry, and uphold strict safety and quality standards. This position requires strong attention to detail, adherence to infection‑control protocols, and a commitment to supporting FMH's mission of providing safe, reliable, and compassionate care.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs venipuncture, arterial, and capillary punctures for patients in inpatient units, the Emergency Department, and outpatient settings. Ensures proper patient identification and provides reassurance to reduce anxiety. Labels, transports, and stores specimens according to laboratory protocols to maintain integrity for analysis. Enters orders, maintains standing order files, manages outpatient orders, and supports efficient draw schedules. Demonstrates positive, professional interactions with patients, families, and staff; supports a culture of service excellence. Follows PPE requirements, aseptic technique, hazardous materials procedures, and all hospital safety protocols. May serve on the Infection Control or Safety Committees; attends required meetings, in‑services, and educational sessions. Maintains attendance expectations, demonstrates professionalism in appearance and conduct, and supports conflict resolution and teamwork. Provides appropriate care for neonate through geriatric populations. Reports any incidents involving staff, patients, or visitors per hospital policy.

$20.00 per hour

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
High School Diploma or equivalent; Completion of the Laboratory orientation and training program OR current registration as an ASCP‑certified or equivalent phlebotomist.
EXPERIENCE
Preferred:
Previous phlebotomy experience in a hospital or clinical setting; Knowledge of medical terminology and specimen handling protocols. SKILLS Proficient in venipuncture, capillary collection, and safe specimen handling across all age groups Accurate labeling, transporting, and storing of specimens following laboratory protocols Knowledge of PPE, aseptic technique, hazardous materials handling, and MSDS/HazMat procedures Ability to enter orders, maintain logs, and use laboratory information systems accurately Identifies potential safety issues, follows protocols, and responds appropriately to unexpected situations
