Job Title:
Phlebotomist Job Description This Phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection in a busy doctor's office environment. You will collect, label, process, and store specimens according to established procedures while maintaining strict accuracy and patient safety. The position requires clear and courteous communication with patients of all ages, careful adherence to physicians' orders, and compliance with all relevant regulations and protocols. Responsibilities Perform venipuncture and other specimen collections, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, using proper technique and safety protocols. Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients of all ages to ensure comfort and understanding. Demonstrate and apply correct techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles for blood draws. Collect and store specimens according to established procedures to maintain specimen integrity. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes accurately and verify that all information is correct. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols. Package specimens for transport, ensuring proper containers, temperatures, and handling procedures are followed. Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling. Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy. Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to maintain a clean and safe work area. Update patient information accurately in the system to support correct identification and processing of specimens. Fully understand and interpret physicians' orders related to laboratory testing and specimen handling. Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results as needed to respond to inquiries in a professional manner. Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety standards. Attend annual department trainings and orientation sessions to stay current with procedures and regulatory requirements. Work collaboratively with a team of healthcare professionals in a fast-paced clinical environment while performing 20-40 blood draws per shift. Essential Skills Minimum of 6 months of hands-on phlebotomy experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. Proven experience performing blood draws using both straight needles and butterfly needles. Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to established procedures and test orders. Experience with recording maintenance data and performing decontamination tasks in a clinical setting. Ability to update and maintain accurate patient information in relevant systems. Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and checking test requisitions or computer labels against orders. Clear, courteous communication skills to explain venipuncture and specimen collection processes to patients. Understanding of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and general laboratory safety practices. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks. High School Diploma orGED. 2-4
years of overall work experience in a related healthcare or clinical environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states. Experience working in a physician clinic or doctor's office setting. Experience working with geriatric populations and comfort interacting with patients of all ages. Ability to handle a daily volume of approximately 20-40 blood draws while maintaining accuracy and professionalism. Strong teamwork skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with clinical staff and physicians. Reliable time management and organizational skills to manage multiple specimen collections and tasks throughout the shift. Work Environment This position is based in a busy doctor's office environment that has recently expanded its medical staff, creating a need for additional phlebotomy support. You will work as part of a team rather than alone and will primarily perform blood draws for the majority of your shift. The role involves serving patients of all ages, with a significant focus on geriatric patients. You can expect to handle approximately 20-40 blood draws per day in a fairly large clinical setting. The job requires standing for most of the shift and working in a fast-paced, patient-focused environment. Initial onboarding includes an orientation period during the first week, followed by on-the-job training with the team. The work setting emphasizes safety, regulatory compliance, accurate specimen handling, and professional interaction with patients and staff. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Overland Park, KS. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $21.00/hr.
