JOB DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of a medical technologist or medical laboratory technician the phlebotomist may perform such tasks after acceptable documented proficiency testing. Collects blood specimens for the clinical laboratory, using venipuncture, capillary, and arterial techniques; maintains equipment and supplies required for phlebotomy. Assist in maintaining records. Perform clerical work including typing, filing, answering telephone, and etc. Obtains, receives, and processes specimens, prepares reagent using established laboratory techniques. Possess the skills required for proper specimen collection, including patient preparation, if applicable, labeling, and handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, transportation and storage of specimens. Follow Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment required. Some travel may be required. QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent Complete training practicum in phlebotomy techniques
Job Knowledge:
Understands use and limitations of laboratory equipment Familiar with standard laboratory methods and techniques Possess critical thinking skills, decisive judgment Capable of collecting, receiving, processing and storing specimens Basic knowledge of specialty areas in the laboratory Pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical process Basic knowledge of regulations Basic knowledge of factors that influence test results (i.e. drawing above IV fluids) Follow all Federal, State and Local regulatory requirements (CLIA, Joint Commission, OSHA, etc.) in order to provide accurate patient results, safe working environment and carries out these responsibilities without constant oversight. Collect blood specimens using appropriate techniques Assure that all infection control precautions are adhered to and keeps work areas clean and in sanitary condition. Process all incoming supplies by indicating the date received and storing in proper location. Assure that all blood specimens are sent to the proper Laboratory along with the proper request. Maintain blood drawing equipment and supplies. Coordinate blood collections with laboratory personnel. Complete reports in a clearly written and organized manner. Always attempts to understand the needs of others in relation to laboratory requests; and demonstrates good judgment when responding to request, especially when interacting with physicians. Maintain a complete knowledge of hospital's fire, safety, infection control, and disaster procedures as contained in the respective manuals. Maintain patient confidentiality. Demonstrate a positive, courteous, and professional attitude with hospital employees as well as patients, families, and visitors. Dress and conduct oneself in a professional and courteous manner at all times. Keep absenteeism and tardiness at a minimum and is available for extra time and duties where needed.
