Job Description

Job Requirements Job Summary Under general direction, supervises and coordinates the daily functions and activities in Phlebotomy and IV Services, if applicable. Ensures the laboratory services meet the needs of patients as ordered by medical staff and collections are performed in accordance with accepted standards, practices, and regulations stipulated by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Primary Responsibilities The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job responsibilities performed. Performs all supervisory duties, including hiring qualified personnel, evaluating work performance, performing disciplinary actions, preparing work schedules to meet the operation's needs, developing and assigning work tasks to maximize productivity, developing and implementing training and continuing education programs, performance appraisals and conducting monthly staff meetings. Responsible for writing/revising standard operating procedures and ensuring staff compliance. Coordinates communication between laboratory personnel and medical personnel regarding operational procedures and immediately addresses any issues that may arise. Communicates regularly with medical and technical staff to address any special needs of the lab required for patient care in phlebotomy. Maintains the inventory of all consumable items and prepares monthly supply orders to ensure an adequate inventory of reagents and supplies are available when needed. Maintains documentation of department activities for reporting purposes and improvement of department operations. Assists the administrative/assistant director with the preparation and management of the operating and capital expenditure budget. Performs responsibilities of phlebotomists during periods of significant staff shortage. Assists in the training, teaching, and evaluating of phlebotomy students and their performance within the rotation to the assigned lab, if applicable. Performs all other duties as assigned. Work Experience Education & Experience - Required High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required. Five (5) years of progressively responsible phlebotomy or laboratory experience or equivalent related experience is required. Education & Experience - Preferred Associate's degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, or the Natural Sciences is preferred. Certification by the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians as a phlebotomist is preferred. Supervisory responsibility, overseeing the work of phlebotomists and/or laboratory personnel, is preferred.
