Job Title:
Phlebotomist II - Morris County Job Description This Phlebotomist II role focuses on providing high-quality specimen collection and processing while supporting daily laboratory operations in a fast-paced clinical environment. You will perform blood draws and other specimen collections, ensure accurate labeling and handling, assist with troubleshooting and training, and contribute to continuous workflow improvements to support safe and efficient patient care. Responsibilities Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner. Collect, label, and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and test requirements. Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture, blood draw, and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity. Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy. Package specimens for transport and follow all protocols to maintain proper temperature and handling conditions. Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes, following all protocol-specific procedures. Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as needed to support a safe and compliant laboratory environment. Update patient information accurately in the system to ensure proper tracking and reporting of test results. Fully understand and interpret physicians' orders to ensure correct tests and procedures are performed. Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory standards. Attend annual department trainings to maintain current knowledge of procedures, safety practices, and regulatory requirements. Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries in a professional and timely manner. Assist with troubleshooting workflow issues and make recommendations to improve efficiency and quality within the laboratory. Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and best practices as needed. Essential Skills Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required by state regulations. Minimum of 2 years of experience performing phlebotomy, including venipunctures and blood draws. Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including blood draws and venipuncture using straight and butterfly needles. Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test orders and protocols. Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying orders. Ability to follow established procedures for specimen collection, handling, packaging, and transport. Knowledge of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations and other applicable safety standards. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks. High School Diploma or GED. Ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and staff when explaining procedures and answering questions. Additional Skills & Qualifications 2-4 years of overall experience in a clinical, laboratory, or hospital setting. Experience working in a fast-paced environment with a high volume of specimen collections. Comfort with updating patient information and handling basic data entry tasks. Ability to participate in and benefit from annual department trainings and ongoing professional development. Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks while maintaining accuracy and quality. Work Environment This role is based in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting where you will perform routine and specialized phlebotomy procedures throughout the day. The schedule typically follows a Monday through Friday first shift, with additional Saturday work as needed. You will work with standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, and various specimen collection containers and tubes. The environment requires strict adherence to safety protocols, including OSHA and DEP regulations, and involves regular handling of biological specimens. You will collaborate closely with clinical and laboratory staff, participate in required annual department trainings, and use computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite to support documentation and communication. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Raritan, NJ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.
