Job Title:
Phlebotomist (Middletown) Job Description The Phlebotomist provides expert support in blood collection and specimen preparation, ensuring high-quality samples are obtained with minimal discomfort for patients across a wide range of ages and backgrounds. This role plays a key part in delivering accurate laboratory results and maintaining a positive, reassuring experience for every patient. Responsibilities Perform venipuncture and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles while ensuring patient comfort and safety. Collect, label, and store blood and other specimens (such as urine or fecal samples) according to established procedures and protocols. Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients so they understand what to expect. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete. Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain sample integrity. Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the original order or script to ensure 100% accuracy. Package specimens for transport, following specific protocols to preserve specimen quality during transit. Store specimens at the required temperature, place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes, and accurately label them according to protocol. Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders related to laboratory testing and specimen handling. Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and follow all safety and decontamination procedures in the laboratory and collection areas. Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to maintain a clean and safe work environment. Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems or records. Attend required annual department trainings to stay current on procedures, safety standards, and best practices. Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results or information as appropriate to satisfy inquiries, following established guidelines. Essential Skills 1-3 years of experience performing blood draws in a clinical or laboratory setting. Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles. Demonstrated experience in blood draw, specimen labeling, centrifuging, and basic specimen processing. Strong administrative skills with excellent attention to detail for accurate labeling, documentation, and order verification. Ability to clearly explain procedures to patients in a courteous and professional manner. Ability to understand and follow physicians' orders and laboratory protocols. Knowledge of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations related to specimen collection and laboratory safety. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with infant and pediatric blood draws is a plus. Experience with broader specimen processing tasks is beneficial. Strong communication skills for interacting with patients, clinical staff, and callers requesting information. Ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy and specimen integrity. Work Environment This role follows a structured weekly schedule: Monday and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The position involves working in clinical and laboratory settings, including specimen collection areas and processing spaces equipped with centrifuges and other standard laboratory tools. The role may include in-state travel, making it a good fit for candidates who enjoy a change of scenery while working within different clinical locations. Appropriate professional attire and protective equipment are required in accordance with safety and regulatory standards. The environment emphasizes accuracy, patient comfort, regulatory compliance, and ongoing training to support high-quality patient care and reliable laboratory results. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Middletown, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
