Job Title:
Float Phlebotomist Job Description The Float Phlebotomist provides expert blood collection and specimen preparation services across multiple locations, ensuring high-quality care and a positive experience for patients of all ages. This role requires strong technical phlebotomy skills, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to put patients at ease while obtaining accurate and sufficient samples with minimal discomfort. The position is ideal for someone who enjoys variety in their workday, including in-state travel and working with a wide demographic of patients. Responsibilities Perform venipuncture and other blood collection procedures using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner. Collect, label, and store blood and other specimens (such as urine or fecal samples) according to established procedures and test requirements. Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort. Prepare specimens by labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing as required by specific test orders and protocols. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all test requisitions or computer labels are 100% accurate against the script or order. Package specimens appropriately for transport, following all required procedures to maintain specimen integrity. Store specimens at the proper temperature and place samples in the correct collection containers or tubes, ensuring accurate labeling and adherence to protocol. Fully understand and accurately follow all physician orders related to laboratory testing and specimen collection. Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and follow all safety and infection control procedures. Wear appropriate attire and required protective equipment while performing all duties. Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and complete related documentation accurately and on time. Update patient information and maintain accurate records in accordance with established procedures. Attend annual department trainings to stay current with procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements. Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries within scope of responsibility. Provide phlebotomy services across multiple sites within the assigned territory, adapting to different clinic environments as needed. Essential Skills 2-3 years of experience performing blood draws in a clinical or laboratory setting. Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles. Demonstrated experience in blood draws, specimen labeling, centrifuging, and basic specimen processing. Strong administrative skills and exceptional attention to detail for accurate labeling, documentation, and order verification. Ability to fully understand and follow physician orders and laboratory test requirements. Knowledge of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations related to safety, infection control, and specimen handling. Ability to update patient information accurately and maintain organized records. Strong communication skills to clearly and courteously explain procedures to patients and respond to inquiries by phone. Capability to work across a wide demographic of patients and help them feel at ease during specimen collection. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with infant blood draws is a plus. Experience with pediatric blood draws is a plus. Experience with specimen processing beyond basic collection is beneficial. Comfort with in-state travel and working in a variety of clinical locations. Ability to read and communicate laboratory results when appropriate and within scope of responsibility. Work Environment This is a float position that involves traveling between multiple sites within the territory, including locations such as Ossining, Newburgh, Beacon, Middletown, Peekskill, and Poughkeepsie. The schedule typically falls between Monday and Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with shifts scheduled within these hours rather than continuously, and includes every other Saturday or Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The work takes place in clinical and laboratory environments where phlebotomy, specimen processing, and patient interaction occur regularly. Team members follow OSHA and DEP safety standards and wear appropriate professional attire and required protective equipment while performing their duties. This role suits individuals who enjoy a change of scenery, working in different facilities, and engaging with a diverse patient population. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Ossining, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $23.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
