Job Title:
Phlebotomist II Job Description The Phlebotomist II supports laboratory operations by performing high-quality specimen collection, processing, and related administrative tasks in a fast-paced clinical environment. This role assists with troubleshooting, helps train others, and recommends workflow improvements while ensuring that all specimens are collected, handled, and documented according to established procedures and regulatory standards. The position requires strong technical phlebotomy skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering courteous and professional patient service. Responsibilities Perform venipuncture and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high degree of accuracy and patient care. Collect, label, and store blood and other specimens such as urine or fecal samples in accordance with established procedures and test requirements. Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to ensure understanding and comfort. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity. Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the original script or order to ensure 100% accuracy. Package specimens for transport, following all protocols to preserve specimen quality and ensure safe handling. Store specimen samples at the appropriate temperature and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes as outlined by protocol. Follow detailed procedures and protocols for specimen handling and transport to maintain compliance and specimen integrity. Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks for equipment and work areas as required. Update and maintain accurate patient and specimen information in laboratory systems and documentation. Answer telephone calls in a professional manner and read or relay laboratory results to address inquiries in accordance with applicable procedures. Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, labeling, and processing to support efficient workflow. Participate in training and provide guidance to team members as needed to support consistent, high-quality phlebotomy practices. Adhere to and fully comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and infection control policies. Essential Skills Demonstrated experience performing blood draws and venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. Proficiency in using straight needles and butterfly needles for specimen collection. Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to established procedures. Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms and computer labels to specimen tubes and orders. Knowledge of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations and related safety standards. Effective verbal communication skills to clearly and courteously explain procedures to patients and respond to inquiries. Ability to update and maintain accurate patient and specimen information in laboratory systems. Customer service skills to interact professionally and empathetically with patients and clinical staff. Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital environment. Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks. High school diploma or
GED. 2-4
years of overall related experience in phlebotomy, laboratory, or clinical support roles. Additional Skills & Qualifications Formal phlebotomy training or coursework in addition to certification is beneficial. Experience handling multiple specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples. Familiarity with laboratory workflows, specimen processing, and basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuges. Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and quality. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple orders, specimens, and documentation simultaneously. Comfort with reading and relaying laboratory results in accordance with established protocols. Demonstrated ability to support training and workflow improvement initiatives within a team setting. Work Environment This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting where you will regularly perform blood draws and handle various types of specimens. You will work with standard phlebotomy and laboratory equipment, including needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and computer systems for order entry and patient information. The environment requires strict adherence to safety, infection control, and regulatory guidelines, including OSHA and DEP regulations. Work typically involves frequent interaction with patients, clinicians, and laboratory staff, as well as periods of standing, walking, and moving between collection and processing areas. Professional attire appropriate for a clinical or laboratory setting is expected, along with the use of required personal protective equipment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Abington, PA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $22.00/hr.
