Job Title:
Phlebotomist Job Description The Phlebotomist plays a key role in supporting laboratory operations by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, processing and storing samples according to established procedures, and ensuring accurate documentation. This position also assists with troubleshooting, training, and recommending workflow improvements to maintain efficient and high-quality patient care. Responsibilities Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and safety throughout the procedure. Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection processes (such as urine or fecal specimens) to patients before and during collection. Collect and store specimens according to established procedures and protocols to maintain specimen integrity. Match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes to ensure accurate identification. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the specific test order and protocol. Check all test requisitions or computer labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing. Package specimens for transport and follow all required procedures to maintain appropriate temperature and handling conditions. Store specimen samples at the required temperature, place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes, and accurately label them according to protocol. Follow different handling and transport procedures as outlined by specific protocols to preserve specimen integrity. Fully understand and correctly interpret physicians' orders related to laboratory tests and specimen collection. Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and adhere to established cleaning and safety procedures. Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems or records. Answer telephone calls in a professional manner and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries within scope of responsibility. Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and compliance guidelines. Assist with troubleshooting issues in specimen collection and processing, and contribute recommendations to improve workflow and efficiency. Participate in training activities, sharing knowledge of phlebotomy techniques, specimen handling, and safety procedures with colleagues as needed. Essential Skills Demonstrated experience performing blood draws and venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital environment. Strong phlebotomy skills, including use of both straight needles and butterfly needles. Proficiency in collecting, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storing specimens according to established procedures. Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms or computer labels with specimen tubes. Competence in handling and processing a variety of specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples. Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and general laboratory safety practices. Ability to read and understand physicians' orders and follow specific test protocols. Strong attention to detail to ensure 100% accuracy in specimen labeling, documentation, and order verification. Effective customer service and communication skills for interacting with patients and answering inquiries. Ability to update and manage patient information accurately. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. High School Diploma orGED. 0-2
years of overall relevant experience in phlebotomy or a related medical/laboratory setting. Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states. Additional Skills & Qualifications Formal phlebotomy training or coursework that supports safe and effective specimen collection and handling. Experience working in a busy clinical laboratory or hospital environment with high patient volumes. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimens, requisitions, and tasks simultaneously. Ability to troubleshoot common issues in specimen collection and processing and suggest workflow improvements. Comfort with reading and communicating laboratory results within defined guidelines. Commitment to providing courteous, patient-centered service during all specimen collection procedures. Work Environment This role operates in a fast-paced clinical laboratory or hospital setting where phlebotomists perform frequent blood draws and other specimen collections throughout the day. You will work with standard laboratory equipment such as needles, butterfly needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen storage units, and use computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite for labeling, documentation, and updating patient information. The environment requires strict adherence to OSHA and DEP safety regulations, including proper decontamination, specimen handling, and maintenance record-keeping. You can expect regular interaction with patients, clinical staff, and other laboratory team members, with a strong emphasis on accuracy, infection control, and timely specimen transport and processing. Attire typically follows clinical and laboratory standards appropriate for a healthcare setting, including any required personal protective equipment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Collegeville, PA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $20.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
