Job Title:
Phlebotomist II Job Description This Phlebotomist II role focuses on performing high-quality specimen collection while supporting daily laboratory operations in a fast-paced healthcare environment. You will conduct blood draws and other specimen collections, ensure accurate labeling and processing, assist with troubleshooting workflow issues, participate in training, and help maintain compliance with safety and regulatory standards. This position requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering courteous, professional service to patients and clinical staff. Responsibilities + Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner. + Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols. + Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients in a clear, courteous, and professional manner to ensure understanding and comfort. + Match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes to ensure correct patient and test identification. + Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders while maintaining specimen integrity. + Verify all test requisitions or computer labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing. + Package specimens securely for transport, following all protocols to maintain specimen stability and integrity during transit. + Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes, following protocol-specific procedures. + Assist in troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, and workflow, and make recommendations to improve efficiency. + Participate in training activities, demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and specimen handling procedures to colleagues as needed. + Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and follow established procedures to maintain a clean and safe work area. + Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, as well as internal safety and quality standards. + Update and verify patient information accurately in the system or on documentation as part of the collection process. + Answer telephone calls professionally, respond to inquiries, and read or relay laboratory results as permitted and appropriate. + Provide courteous, patient-focused customer service and maintain a professional demeanor when interacting with patients, clinicians, and coworkers. Essential Skills + Demonstrated experience performing blood draws and venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles. + Experience collecting, labeling, and processing specimens, including centrifuging, splitting, and freezing samples according to test requirements. + Ability to collect and handle various specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, following established protocols. + Strong attention to detail in matching laboratory requisitions or computer labels to specimen tubes to ensure accurate identification. + Ability to verify test requisitions or computer labels against orders to maintain 100% accuracy. + Knowledge of proper specimen storage, including temperature requirements and appropriate collection containers or tubes. + Understanding of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations and laboratory safety practices. + Effective communication skills to clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and specimen collection procedures to patients. + Customer service skills and a patient-centered approach when interacting with individuals of all ages. + Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required. + Minimum of 2+ years of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. + Pediatric and adult blood drawing skills with the ability to perform collections on all age groups. + Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks. + High school diploma or GED. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Experience working in a fast-paced clinical, laboratory, or hospital environment. + Familiarity with laboratory workflows, specimen processing, and basic medical terminology. + Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and quality. + Strong organizational skills for managing specimens, documentation, and maintenance records. + Comfort using computer systems for patient information updates, label printing, and basic data entry. + 0-2 years of broader work experience in addition to phlebotomy-specific experience, depending on overall background. + Ability to remain calm, professional, and reassuring with patients, including children and individuals who may be anxious about blood draws. Work Environment This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting where you perform frequent blood draws and other specimen collections throughout the day. You will work with standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight needles, butterfly needles, collection tubes, and centrifuges, as well as computer systems and Microsoft Office applications for labeling, documentation, and communication. The environment requires strict adherence to safety protocols, including OSHA and DEP regulations, and involves regular decontamination and maintenance of the work area. You will interact closely with patients of all ages, clinical staff, and laboratory colleagues, providing professional and courteous service while managing multiple tasks and maintaining accuracy in specimen handling and documentation. #ACTjobsLC26 Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Philadelphia, PA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $24.50 - $24.50/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
