The Mobile Phlebotomist is a vital member of the laboratory team, responsible for performing blood and specimen collection procedures in off-site environments such as long-term care facilities and community clinics. This role ensures accurate and safe collection, labeling, handling, and transport of specimens in compliance with CLIA, CAP, HIPAA, and California Department of Public Health regulations. The Mobile Phlebotomist must demonstrate professionalism , attention to detail , and strong interpersonal skills while maintaining patient privacy and adhering to infection control standards. This position requires the ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and represent the organization with integrity in diverse settings. Patient Care & Communication Greet patients professionally, identify yourself, and explain procedures clearly. Provide instructions for self-collected specimens (e.g., urine, stool, swabs). Communicate effectively and compassionately to ensure patient comfort. Monitor and respond to patient reactions during and after specimen collection. Specimen Collection & Verification & Accessioning Perform venipuncture and skin puncture procedures following laboratory policies and procedures. Verify patient identity and confirm valid test orders prior to collection. Select appropriate tubes and supplies based on test ordered. Document patient details and collection conditions (e.g., fasting status) on requisition forms. Follow proper order of drawing and aseptic techniques to prevent contamination. Recollect specimens, when necessary, due to labeling errors or compromised integrity. Follow all standard safety precautions prior, during and after each patient's interaction such as changing of gloves between patients, using correct handwashing techniques. Accession specimens in mobile settings by accurately labeling, documenting, and assigning accession numbers to maintain specimen integrity and chain of custody. Specimen Handling, Packaging & Transport Label specimens accurately and prepare them for processing (centrifugation, aliquoting). Ensure proper documentation of collected samples for tracking and testing purposes. Ensure that samples are always secured while travelling between locations. Store specimens at required temperatures and package them for transport. Complete chain-custody if needed and ship documentation. Ensure timely delivery of specimens to designated location in compliance with federal and state standards (i.e. CLIA, CAP, CADPH, OSHA and DOT standards). Facility & Client Interaction Coordinate with facility staff and caregivers to ensure smooth specimen collection. Clarify orders and patient preparation requirements with external clients. Maintain professional relationships and represent the laboratory with integrity. Ensure that we are following any facility procedures during the specimen collection process (e.g. Check in with staff prior to collection, provide a list of patients that were drawn).
Educational Requirement:
Valid California Phlebotomy Technician License (CPT) Valid California Driver's License High school diploma or equivalent. 2+ years of experience as a Mobile Phlebotomist, showcasing strong blood-drawing skills and proficiency in various venipuncture techniques.
Other Qualification & Requirements:
Experience with working with In-Home and Care facilities. Good understanding of various software programs and ability to comprehend modern technology. Attention to detail and accuracy in specimen collection and documentation. Ability to work efficiently and independently in a fast-paced healthcare environment. Strong organizational and time management skills, ensuring the timely and proper handling of specimens. Familiarity with infection control protocols and safety measures. Willingness to adapt to changing healthcare technologies and continuous professional development.
