Job Title:
Phlebotomist Job Description The Phlebotomist performs high-quality blood draws and specimen collections while providing excellent customer service to patients from pediatrics through geriatrics in a fast-paced patient service center. This role supports daily lab operations by collecting, processing, labeling, and preparing specimens for testing and transport, troubleshooting routine issues, assisting with training, and recommending workflow improvements to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient service. Responsibilities Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles on patients ranging from pediatrics to geriatrics. Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and test requirements. Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the specific test order and laboratory protocols. Prepare and package specimens for transport, following procedures to maintain specimen integrity, including appropriate temperature control and container selection. Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes, accurately labeling and following protocol-specific procedures. Update patient information and specimen details accurately in the electronic medical record and laboratory systems. Record maintenance data and perform basic decontamination tasks to support a safe and compliant laboratory environment. Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders to ensure proper specimen collection and processing. Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and infection control procedures. Attend annual departmental trainings and orientation sessions to maintain current knowledge of procedures and regulations. Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results as needed to satisfy inquiries within scope and guidelines. Assist in troubleshooting day-to-day workflow issues and make recommendations to improve efficiency and service quality. Support training and orientation activities for new staff by demonstrating proper phlebotomy and specimen handling techniques as needed. Maintain a high level of customer service, ensuring patients have a positive experience throughout the specimen collection process. Manage a high daily volume of patients, organizing work to meet targets and maintain timely service. Essential Skills 1-2+ years of recent phlebotomy experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or clinical setting. Demonstrated proficiency with venipuncture, including hard sticks, using both straight needles and butterfly needles. Ability to draw at least 30 patients per day and work comfortably in a high-volume environment. Experience working with patients across the age spectrum, from pediatrics to geriatrics. Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and clinical staff. Good computer skills, including working with electronic medical records (EMR) and laboratory information systems. High school diploma or equivalent. Additional Skills & Qualifications Formal phlebotomy training or certification is strongly beneficial. Demonstrated flexibility in adapting to changing workloads, schedules, and patient needs. Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate labeling, documentation, and order verification. Effective verbal communication skills for interacting with patients, clinical staff, and team members. Ability to maintain composure and professionalism in a busy patient service center environment. Comfort working with a diverse patient population, including pediatric and geriatric patients. Interest in contributing to workflow improvements and supporting a culture of continuous improvement. Willingness to participate in ongoing training and annual departmental education. Work Environment This role is based in a medium-sized patient service center setting that serves approximately 65-90 patients per day. The environment is fast-paced and team-oriented, with two other employees working on-site. The phlebotomist spends most of the shift on their feet, with a scheduled one-hour lunch break. Work involves frequent interaction with patients from pediatrics through geriatrics and requires consistent use of phlebotomy equipment, centrifuges, specimen collection tubes, and computers for EMR and laboratory systems. The position follows established safety, infection control, and regulatory protocols, including OSHA and DEP guidelines. New hires receive approximately two weeks of orientation and training at the start of the role to become familiar with procedures, systems, and workflows. Attire is typical clinical and laboratory-appropriate clothing suitable for a patient service center setting. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Greenville, SC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $17.75 - $18.75/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
