30-minute lunch break & two 15-minute breaks per shift (as time permits) Job Overview JR Enterprise LLC is seeking a skilled, independent, and compassionate Contract Phlebotomist to support the Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospital in Houston, Texas. In this role, you will provide critical diagnostic support for our nation's veterans by performing blood draws and specimen collection in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The ideal candidate thrives in a high-volume environment, possesses exceptional technical skills for difficult draws, and delivers superb customer service aligned with VAMC Standards of Behavior.
Key Responsibilities & Duties High-Volume Phlebotomy:
Independently perform blood draws for 40 to 80 inpatients and outpatients per day. Must be highly competent in handling challenging cases, including managing at least a 20% rate of "hard sticks."
Patient Safety & Identification:
Strictly verify patient identities using two approved identifiers prior to any procedure, adhering strictly to Medical Center Policy, Specimen Collection Policy, and The Joint Commission guidelines.
Blood Collection:
Draw blood and blood cultures using proper venipuncture techniques, plastic vacuum tubes, blood collection needles, or butterfly sets.
Specimen Handling & Transport:
Properly label all specimens in the immediate presence of the patient. Century-fuge, separate serum, and transport/tube specimens to the third-floor laboratory using the Trans Logic system.
Diverse Collections:
Perform non-blood collections, including various types of urine collections and glucose tolerance testing (GTT).
Lab Administration & Data Entry:
Interpret/clarify physician orders, input test data into the computer system (utilizing Multipurpose Accessioning, Pre-Accessioning, and Active Pre-Accession options), and document rejected specimens according to protocol (e.g., insufficient volume, misidentified).
Customer Service & Communication:
Answer phone requests for verbal test orders, add-ons, and results. Communicate data clearly to physicians, nurses, and authorized medical staff while providing a comforting, empathetic experience to allay patient fears.
Qualifications & Requirements Experience:
Proven experience working independently in high-volume laboratory or hospital environments.
Technical Skills:
Expert proficiency in venipuncture techniques, butterfly sets, and managing difficult/hard draws.
Compliance:
Ability to strictly adhere to the VAMC Customer Service Standards of Behavior Policy and Joint Commission guidelines.
Soft Skills:
Superb customer service, excellent communication skills, and a strong sense of empathy for patient care.
Systems:
Familiarity with laboratory information systems and pneumatic tube transport systems (Trans Logic) is a plus.
