Job Title:
Phlebotomist I Job Description The main function of a Phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. This role is vital for ensuring the smooth operation of specimen collection and processing. Responsibilities Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data. Decontaminate and update patient information. Collect and store specimens according to established procedures. Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collection processes, such as urine or fecal as required. Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles. Fully understand all of the physicians' orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order. Check all test requisitions or computer labels against script to ensure 100% accuracy. Package specimens for transport and store specimen samples according to required temperature. Accurately label and follow procedures outlined by protocol necessary for transport to maintain specimen integrity. Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations. Attend annual department trainings. Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries. Essential Skills Proficiency in phlebotomy and blood draws. 1-2 years of experience in specimen collection. Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required. Work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Additional Skills & Qualifications High School Diploma or GED. Experience in a fast-paced environment. Ability to work independently and manage time effectively. Work Environment The work schedule is Monday to Friday, from 8am to 5pm. This position is located in Alexandria, at an IOP facility where the candidate will be responsible for drawing approximately 20 patients and processing and shipping specimens. The candidate will be working alone, so roughly 2 years of experience is required to manage the responsibilities efficiently. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Alexandria, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr.
