University of Washington, Seattle, WA Overview:
We are seeking a highly motivated and capable research professional to fill the role of Mobile Phlebotomist as a part of a national study called SHINE (Study of Health in Early and Adult Life). This study is a follow-up to a well-known longitudinal study (the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development) that began in the early 1990s. In SHINE2, a similar data collection will be conducted and merged with the existing database to examine aspects of health and aging over the life course. The Mobile Phlebotomist will conduct in-home study visits with adult subjects (ages 35-42) in the Seattle Metropolitan Area. The in-home study visits will be conducted in accordance with an IRB-approved research protocol. The Mobile Phlebotomist will perform an in-home blood draw, processing (including the use of centrifuge), and preparation of aliquoted samples for overnight shipment. This is a temporary, contract position starting in the morning between 7am and 10am. The study protocol will take less than 2.0 hours to complete, excluding travel time. This position will pay a flat fee per completed subject, accounting for mileage to subject homes and the purchase of dry ice for the samples.
Main Responsibilities:
- Perform in-home blood draw and processing according to IRB approved research protocol guidelines
- Pick up dry ice prior to visit for proper cold storage of collected samples
- Prepare and drop off samples for overnight shipment with provided shipment and storage containers
Requirements:
- 2 or more years of experience working as a certified phlebotomist with extended practice in both blood draw and blood processing, involving the use of a centrifuge and aliquoting.
- Able to drive (occasionally long distances) by car to the in-home study visit
- Able to access an online map for navigation and prompt arrival to the in-home study visit
- Have a reliable mobile device for communication with the study team and subjects
- Have availability in the mornings (7-10 am) when all study visits are scheduled to begin
- Have availability on weekends (if needed)
- Able to complete study related paperwork
- Able to perform proper handling and disposal of blood draw/processing waste
- Able to maintain good condition of study equipment and supplies
- Preferable if have own centrifuge The Mobile Phlebotomist will be trained by research team at the University of Washington to follow the study blood sample collection and processing protocol.
The Mobile Phlebotomist will comply with laboratory safety policies when handling human blood samples, including the use of Biological Safety Cabinets and Personal Protective Equipment/PPE.

The duration of the study is dependent on the completion of the entire eligible study cohort in the Seattle Metropolitan Area (about 50 subjects).
