REPORTS TO
Laboratory Team Leader SUMMARY:
The Phlebotomist conducts pre-analytical laboratory functions (specimen collection and processing) efficiently and accurately while providing high quality patient care.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Verifies or records identity of patient and converses with patient to relieve fear of procedure. Keeps drawing area clean, neat and orderly. Collect blood samples from wide range of patient population from newborn to elderly. Collects samples by venipuncture and capillary techniques that maintain specimen integrity and follow PCAA policies and procedures. Assists in collection of other laboratory samples such as urines, swabs, and stool specimens for laboratory analysis. Accurately and thoroughly explains collection procedures for take home collection kits to patients and family members. Maintains supplies and assists with inventory receiving and restocking to ensure the availability of supplies to perform patient care responsibilities. Performs waived laboratory testing, if results are questioned brings it to the attention of technician. Performs specimen-related computer functions including entering physician's orders, processing cancelations, and entering add-on tests to ensure regulatory compliance (COLA, CLIA, etc.). Prepare and process samples for send-out testing to reference laboratories. Adheres to OSHA and PCAA department policies for specimen collection and handling to ensure a safe work environment. Prepares schedules for the next day which includes printing schedules and scrubbing for lab orders prior to patient arrival. Speaks to callers, patients, physicians, other staff and anyone they interact with during their assigned work hours in a polite, courteous, understandable manner that projects Primary Care Associates interest in providing high quality customer service. Completes assigned duties in a timely, accurate manner. Demonstrates a team spirit through cooperative, supportive professional work relationships. Complies with company policies and procedures. Maintains a regular and reliable level of attendance. Maintains confidentiality of patient information. Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or one to three months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Computer skills required:
Proficiency utilizing computer including Microsoft Office Suite applications. Experience utilizing Epic software is preferred
OTHER SKILS REQUIRED
At least 1 year of previous training or experience. Pleasant and effective communication skills. Ability to work well with all customers of Primary Care Associates. Ability to prioritize and work efficiently. Able to work under pressure and in a fast pace environment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Frequently required to stand, walk, bend, stoop, talk or hear. Continually required to utilize hand and finger dexterity. Continually exposed to bloodborne and airborne pathogens or infectious materials While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include: close vision; color vision; depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
