POSITION SUMMARY
The Physical Therapist (PT) will develop, plan, implement and support specialized physical therapy programs and services for eligible, identified students in accordance with the Individualized Education Plan. Services include direct service and/or consultation with school staff, families, medical personnel, community agencies, and others as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Assess students using appropriate evaluation tools including standardized tests, clinical observations, and review of medical and education reports to determine need for therapy intervention plan. Evaluate the student's ability and formulate the student's physical profile through a variety of functional and standardized assessments, skilled observations, checklists histories, interviews and review of medical and educational reports to determine need for therapy intervention plan. Observe, assess and monitor student motor functions, control and coordinator of posture and movement, strength, endurance, joint range of motion and overall functional gross motor skills; mobility: wheelchair skills, ambulation with or without adaptive equipment and transfer skills; and needs for additional or environmental adaptations: accessibly, wheelchair needs or repairs, adaptive devices and equipment utilization for lower extremity or overall gross motor performance. Collaborate with other disciplines to ensure team understanding of student physical performance, strengths and needs, through evaluation, educational program planning, and service delivery. Synthesize evaluation results into a comprehension written report which reflects strengths and barriers to student participation in the educational environment; directs program development; and guides evidence-based intervention. Develop functional intervention plans based on student needs and evaluation results and implements individualized therapy programs for qualifying students. Document screenings, evaluations, Individual Education Plans (IEPs), progress reports, classroom/home programs and other data, as required. Keep thorough ongoing records for the individual student receiving therapy or other school-provided services. Complete required paperwork for special education compliance and Medicaid billing. Participate in multidisciplinary meetings to review evaluation results, integrate findings with other disciplines, offer recommendations, and develop individual education plans and interventions plans to achieve IEP goals. Provide targeted, evidence-based therapeutic intervention to facilitate student participation and functional performance within the school environment. Communicate regularly and effectively with students, staff, and parents regarding student's therapy programs to achieve student outcomes. Educate students, educational personnel, and family to facilitate skills in areas of functional mobility and school access, as well as health maintenance and safety. Monitor and reassess the effects of physical therapy intervention and the need to continue, modify, or discontinue intervention. Maintain clinical and administrative records in accordance with professional standards, state guidelines, and school system policy. Provide legal and ethical supervision of physical therapy assistant assuming responsibility for the students served by assistance. Provide classroom programs, instruction in management techniques, adapted equipment, and environmental modifications including the identification of architectural barriers. Participate on the IEP team to establish goals, objectives and the length of time required to achieve the goals. Instruct staff in safe transfer techniques. Adapt, fabricate and maintain specialized equipment required for therapy services or student needs. Provide in-service training to staff, as needed. Assist with education, orientation and preparation of receiving school staffs and students regarding issues, concerns, and information about "inclusion" of exceptional children in regular school and classroom programs. Plan and maintain departmental supplies and equipment; maintains records as required. Travel throughout and outside of the district will be required. Complete random moment in time studies as required by MAC program guidelines. Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records in order to provide appropriate documentation for Medicaid Billing duties completed monthly. Adhere to federal and state legislation, regulation, and policies that affect physical therapy practice. Provide all necessary reports/records in an accurate and timely manner. Attend professional development conferences, seminars, etc., as needed, to stay current with PT practices and convey this information received to colleagues. Perform all other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with a variety of clienteles. Calm demeanor for handling stressful situations. Respect for administrators, students, teachers, parents, and support staff. Possess effective interpersonal skills with the ability to interface diplomatically with administrators, teachers, and other colleagues within the district, as well as with outside professional contacts, using tact, patience, and courtesy. Possess the ability to work effectively and collaborate with various stakeholders. Ability to accomplish tasks that are often interrupted by persons with special and/or immediate needs. Ability to report to work consistently and promptly as scheduled. Possess effective organization, mathematics, and computer skills. Possess extensive knowledge of physical therapy theories, models of practices, principles, and evidence-based practices to guide intervention decisions. Knowledge of human development throughout the lifespan and integrates with student's unique developmental status. Ability to maintain a flexible schedule in order to meet inflexible deadlines and the needs of students, families and staff.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy. Hold an active and valid Physical Therapy license issued by the Missouri Board of Healing Art. Graduate of an accredited physical therapy program.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with employees, students, and the public through the use of the telephone/email and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly to perform heavy physical labor requiring ability to lift, carry, push, pull and move heavy objects or materials such as lifting over 50 lbs. on a continuous basis; lifting over 50 lbs. maximum or carrying any object weighing over 25 lbs. Regular climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, and repetitive motions. Requires ability to sit, stand, and move for long periods to complete work. Requires ability to handle multiple tasks with frequent interruptions and ability to work in noisy, stressful, and crowded environments. Travel inside and outside the district will be required as needed.
