The Detroit Fire Department began providing dedicated ambulance treatment and transport services in the summer of 1972, with the mission to provide the citizens and visitors of Detroit with compassionate and professional emergency medical care. With the implementation of the Detroit Fire Department's Medical First Responder Program, the City now has over 900 licensed individuals in the Detroit Fire Department providing care at the MFR, EMT and Paramedic level, staffing over sixty medically licensed Fire and EMS vehicles, responding to over 140,000 calls for service annually. Under general supervision, on an assigned shift, is responsible for direct day-to-day management of Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics and provides key support to the shift supervisor in the management of the shift. Assists in the direction of and oversees emergency medical services activities of medic units throughout the City of Detroit. Reassigns emergency care personnel and equipment to meet changing conditions and emergency situations. Responds to emergency requests, rides with, instructs, and evaluates medic unit personnel to ensure proper medical assistance techniques, procedures and general performance techniques are followed. Inspects medical transport vehicles and equipment for proper function, maintenance and adequate supplies. Monitors emergency medical dispatches. Resolves matters of response priorities in the absence of the supervisor. Responds to and gives direction to field units in difficult or unusual cases. Takes charge of emergency medical service activities at multiple injury accidents and disasters. Reviews reports and billing information obtained by field personnel, as required. Evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of emergency medical service operations and makes recommendations thereupon. Conducts training sessions and otherwise assists in the instruction of personnel in emergency service and life-support techniques. Observes for and enforces compliance with safety regulations. Investigates personnel grievances, complaints and conducts other special investigations. Prepares required records and reports. Assumes command responsibilities for the shift in the absence of the supervisor. Delivers supplies. Performs as incident commander at the scene of emergencies resolving fundamental issues until the arrival of higher rank personnel or resolution of the emergency. High School graduation or GED. Preferably, with completion of some college-level courses in Business or Public Administration. Completed a minimum of four (4) years as a Technician or Paramedic in the Emergency Medical Service, with the Detroit Fire Department EMS Division, inclusive of two (2) years as a Paramedic with the Detroit Fire Department EMS Division.LICENSE, CERTIFICATION AND OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Employees in this class may be required to provide patient care; valid State of Michigan Paramedic License required. Employees in this class are required to drive department motor vehicles; valid State of Michigan Operator License required. Local Medical Control certification required.EQUIVALENCY

Interact effectively with injured persons and the general public, physicians and other medical or departmental personnel with tact and diplomacy. Willfully perform any assigned task. Work involves office and field activities.Probationary Period:
Individuals promoted to a position in this class will be required to serve a probationary period of six months with the possibility of a six-month extension for a total of twelve months. The performance will be carefully evaluated during the probationary period.
