Beaufort Memorial, a not-for-profit hospital founded in 1944 on the banks of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, is licensed for 201 beds (169 acute, 14 rehabilitation and 18 mental health). DESCRIPTION JOB SUMMARY
The Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) is an integral member of the Emergency Department (ED) clinical team. This role provides high-quality, evidence-based patient care in a fast-paced environment and includes dedicated responsibilities within the Provider-in-Triage (PIT) model. The APP performs initial medical evaluations, initiates diagnostic workups, and manages a diverse patient population ranging from low acuity to high acuity presentations under physician supervision as required by state regulation. Emergency Department Clinical Care Perform comprehensive assessments, formulate differential diagnoses, and develop patient-centered treatment plans. Order, interpret, and act on diagnostic tests including labs, EKGs, and imaging. Perform ED procedures within scope of practice (e.g., wound care, splinting, I&D, suturing, point-of-care ultrasound if credentialed). Manage acute and chronic conditions, provide timely interventions, and escalate care when needed. Document patient encounters accurately and completely in the electronic medical record within required timeframes. Collaborate with physicians, nurses, technicians, and ancillary staff to ensure seamless patient care and throughput. Provider-in-Triage (PIT) Duties Serve as the initial clinical provider for patients presenting to the ED. Rapidly assess patients to determine acuity and initiate appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic orders. Identify high-risk presentations requiring immediate transfer to treatment areas. Begin early interventions to reduce door-to-provider times and support ED flow. Communicate care plans to patients and families while setting expectations for next steps. EMTALA Compliance Comply fully with the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) by providing an appropriate Medical Screening Examination (MSE) to all individuals presenting to the Emergency Department and determining the presence or absence of an emergency medical condition. Stabilize patients with identified emergency medical conditions within the capability and capacity of the facility or arrange appropriate transfer in accordance with EMTALA regulations and hospital policies. Ensure all transfers are medically appropriate, properly documented, and coordinated with receiving facilities and transport services. Collaborate with nursing staff and ancillary services to ensure EMTALA compliance is maintained at all times. Participate in EMTALA-related education, audits, and quality improvement initiatives as required.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS JOB QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
If a
Physician Assistant:
Bachelors Degree required. Successful completion of a CAAHEP approved program. Successful completion of a national certifying examination given by NCCPA. If an
Nurse Practitioner:
Masters or Doctorate Degree in Nursing. Graduate of an approved NLN or equivalent nursing program.
EXPERIENCE
Minimum 1-2 years of emergency medicine or acute care experience preferred. New graduates with strong ED rotations and clinical references may be considered.
JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED
Must be able to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues in a fast-paced office environment. Must be able to multi-task and handle a variety of issues at one time.

Must have/maintain current SC PA licensure. If a
Nurse Practitioner:
Current unrestricted SC Advance Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license with Prescriptive Authority. Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS required
WORKING CONDITIONS
Significant standing, sitting, bending, and some lifting; good manual dexterity, vision and hearing required. Must be able to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues in a fast-paced office environment. Must be able to multi-task and handle a variety of issues at one time. Nocturnist position with night-shift schedule, including weekends and holidays as needed. Rotating or fixed schedules depending on service needs. Work performed in the Emergency Department; frequent walking, standing, and responding to patient care needs. Exposure to acutely ill patients and high-stress situations is expected. ONGOING COMPETENCIES
1. Clinical Assessment & Triage Rapid evaluation and prioritization of patients based on acuity. Accurate application of triage scoring systems (e.g., ESI). Identification of high-risk presentations requiring immediate intervention. Initiation of early diagnostic and treatment orders in PIT. 2. Diagnostic Interpretation Correct interpretation of EKGs, imaging results, and laboratory data. Recognition of life-threatening abnormalities and critical findings. Appropriate escalation to attending physicians when clinically indicated. 3. Emergency Procedures Wound assessment, repair, and closure (sutures, staples, tissue adhesives). Incision & drainage of abscesses. Splinting and orthopedic injury management. Foreign body removal. Basic ultrasound-guided procedures (if credentialed). Airway management basics: bag-mask ventilation, adjunct placement; ETI if within scope. IV access or ultrasound-guided IV placement 4. Clinical Decision-Making Formulation of differential diagnoses across all age groups. Evidence-based management of common ED presentations (chest pain, abdominal pain, respiratory complaints, injuries, infections, behavioral health). Safe discharge planning with appropriate instructions and follow-up 5. Medication Management Safe ordering, dosing, and monitoring of ED medications. Familiarity with sepsis bundles, pain management protocols, and sedation requirements. Knowledge of pediatric dosing if applicable to your ED. 6. Documentation & Compliance Complete and accurate charting within required timeframes. Documentation that supports medical necessity, risk level, and regulatory compliance. Understanding and adherence to CMS, EMTALA, and hospital policies. 7. Communication & Team Collaboration Effective communication with ED physicians, RNs, techs, and consult teams. Clear patient communication, shared decision-making, and expectation setting. Ability to manage difficult conversations, de-escalate conflict, and deliver patient-centered care. 8. Throughput & Flow Management Efficient patient handoffs from PIT to main ED. Awareness of departmental metrics such as door-to-provider time, LWBS/LWOT, and length of stay. Appropriate use of rapid orders and early interventions to improve flow. 9. Safety & Quality Participation in quality improvement initiatives (e.g., sepsis pathway adherence, stroke metrics, antibiotic stewardship). Maintenance of procedural competencies (annual or per hospital requirement). Consistent review of safety events and incorporation of learning into practice. Annual Review of Fire/Safety/Disaster Plan 10. Professional Development Completion of required CME/CE hours. Maintenance of certifications (BLS/ACLS/PALS/ENPC as required). Participation in departmental education, workshops, and simulations (airway, trauma, pediatric resuscitation). Engagement in peer review and self-assessment.
