Summary The Department of Internal Medicine, Section of Hematology/Oncology is seeking a qualified candidate for an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) position in an inpatient hematology role at the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center at Baylor College of Medicine in the Texas Medical Center. This position is open to either a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA). The APP will provide medical care to patients with hematologic disorders in the inpatient setting under the direction of a supervising physician. The candidate will be expected to demonstrate clinical excellence, scholarly enthusiasm, and a track record of high-quality clinical performance. Job Purpose The Inpatient Hematology APP will provide advanced clinical care for hospitalized patients with hematologic disorders in collaboration with attending hematologists, hematology-oncology fellows, and the multidisciplinary inpatient care team. Core responsibilities include managing admissions, performing daily clinical assessments, developing and implementing treatment plans, coordinating inpatient care, and discharge planning. The APP will work closely with nursing staff, outpatient hematology APPs, care navigators, and ancillary services to ensure safe, evidence-based, and patient-centered care throughout hospitalization, including coordination of complex discharges. The role includes participation in daily inpatient rounds, weekly intake meetings, and monthly hematology tumor boards. As appropriate to training, credentialing, and institutional scope of practice, the APP may also have the opportunity to perform hematology-related procedures, including bone marrow biopsies and lumbar punctures with intrathecal treatment administration. Job Duties
  • Obtain detailed patient histories and perform physical examinations.
  • Perform, order, and interpret diagnostic procedures in accordance with patient health concerns.
  • Prescribe appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments in accordance with scope of practice and institutional protocols.
  • Maintain accurate medical records and document orders, progress notes, treatments, and procedures in the electronic health record.
  • Monitor and ensure accuracy and completeness of patient medical records.
  • Provide follow-up and ongoing inpatient care in accordance with protocols established with the supervising physician.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians, patients, and family members regarding patient care plans and clinical status.
  • Collaborate with providers and practice staff to identify appropriate patients for care management and coordination.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Education Required:
Nurse Practitioner:
Master's degree in Nursing.
Physician Assistant:
Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies.
NOTE:
Bachelor's degree in Physician Assistant Studies accepted based on terminal degree requirements at time of graduation.
Experience Required:
None required.
Certification/Licenses/Registration:
Nurse Practitioner:
Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing. Current Texas licensure as a Nurse Practitioner (APRN-NP).
Physician Assistant:
Current license as a Physician Assistant by the State of Texas Physician Assistant Board.
Both:
Specialty certification as required by department. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
