DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
of the Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner Scope of practice according to the Texas State Regulations, include, but not limited to the following: Membership of the Medical Staff, including hospital privileges. Active and ongoing involvement in the Quality Assurance activities in the Emergency Department. Taking patient histories and performing physical examinations of a patient and recording or dictating the history and physical in the medical record. This includes the Medical Screening Examination according to the interpretation of 42 CRF489.24 of the Emergency medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA). Performing or assisting in the performance of laboratory and patient screening procedures. Performing diagnostic and therapeutic studies. Ordering and interpreting diagnostic laboratory tests, radiological studies, medication or various other therapies. Order may be verbal or written. Establishing diagnostic and therapeutic studies. Instructing and counseling patients regarding mental and physical health, inducing but not limited to the following: Diet Disease Treatment Normal Development Prevention Referring patients to appropriate community health facilities, agencies and resources. Also referring and conversing with appropriate consult persons in regard to patient management and may sign memorandum of transfer forms. Performing such other tasks, not prohibited by law in which the mid-level practitioner has been trained and is proficient to perform. Performing diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, subject to state regulations and mid-level practitioner training/experience, such as, but not limited to: Initiation of IV therapy by peripheral, central, intraosseous routes and venous cut down. Injections Arterial puncture Venipuncture Initiation of basic/Advance Life Support in all patients and in all settings. Thoracentesis Lumbar Puncture Wound care and suturing Debridement of wounds Incision and drainage of abscess Application of casts and splints Nasogastric intubation Removal of foreign bodies (including sutures) Tube thoracostomy EKG Uretheral catherization Arthrocentesis Reduction of closed dislocations and fractures Endotracheal intubation and other advanced airway techniques Local, digital, and IV regional nerve blocks Administration of medication and or IV sedation Other interventions or procedures as directed by the supervising physician Qualifications Hold current state licensure with TMB or TBON BLS, ACLS, PALS, ATLS
