The Acute Care Surgery (ACS) APP Fellowship is a 12-month, full-time training program. Farrell, Karyn B. Position Summary The Acute Care Surgery (ACS) APP Fellowship is a 12-month, full-time training program designed for Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants seeking advanced experience in trauma, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care. Based at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital—a 737-bed academic medical center and the region's only Level I Trauma Center—this fellowship provides immersive, hands-on clinical training in a high-acuity environment. Program Highlights 12-month structured fellowship Training in a Level I Trauma Center Simulation lab and procedural training Off-service and community ED rotations Participation in surgical grand rounds and lectures APP-led mentorship and leadership structure Key Responsibilities Perform histories, physical exams, and clinical assessments Diagnose and manage acute, trauma, and surgical conditions Order and interpret diagnostic tests Develop and implement treatment plans Perform bedside procedures (e.g., I&D, chest tubes, central lines) Assist in surgical care and patient management Provide patient and family education Document care in electronic medical records Coordinate care, referrals, and discharge planning Collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare teams Skills & Competencies Developed Advanced clinical decision-making Procedural proficiency (including ultrasound basics) Trauma and critical care management Interdisciplinary teamwork and communication Qualifications Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program Eligible for Virginia licensure Strong interest in acute care, trauma, or surgical critical care Excellent communication and teamwork skills Work Environment & Physical Requirements Fast-paced, high-acuity clinical setting Prolonged standing, walking, and physical activity Ability to lift up to 50-100 lbs (with assistance as needed) Requires strong problem-solving, communication, and adaptability Why Join Us? What We Require:
Education:
Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing and Nurse Practitioner Program or Accredited Physician Assistant Program.
Experience:
Clinical experience appropriate to specific practice/ department preferred. Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Current Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant license required. DEA licensure required. Eligible for prescriptive authority in accordance with State regulations and as authorized by the Virginia Boards of Nursing and Medicine.
Other Minimum Qualifications:
Demonstrates knowledge and competency of core skills, related to assigned area, that serves as a basis for continued growth and progression of skills and pace. Demonstrates good written and oral communication skills. Computer literacy required for automated computer systems and programs such as electronic medical records.
