POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Family Medicine Faculty role involves a combination of clinical and academic responsibilities, with a focus on training and supervising residents in the full scope of family medicine, including obstetrics. The faculty member will work in collaborative environment with other faculty, residents, and healthcare teams.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide direct clinical care to a diverse patient panel in a continuity clinic setting. Supervise and mentor family medicine residents in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Perform family medicine procedures and manage patient care in a variety of settings. Participate in 3-4 half-day clinical sessions per week, providing direct patient care and resident supervision. Work collaboratively with other faculty, SIU faculty members, and other healthcare professionals include BJC Alton Memorial. Participate in the education and training of family medicine residents by providing direct supervision during outpatient rotations, including OB. Precept residents several times a week, helping them develop clinical skills, diagnostic abilities, and patient management strategies. Serve as a role model for professional behavior, teaching, and patient care, while maintaining an open, approachable demeanor for residents and colleagues. Participate in academic activities of the residency program, including didactics, meetings, curriculum development, and advising. This includes one half-day didactic teaching, and three half-days dedicated to scholarly work each week. Attend all relevant clinical department meetings, pertinent health care facility site meetings, and any additional meetings that may arise, necessitating the provider's participation. Provide coverage for Family Medicine Inpatient Services, which includes managing hospitalized patients at least 8 times per year, ensuring continuity of care and supervision of residents during inpatient rotations. Ensure high quality patient care is delivered regardless of age or sex, focused on family medicine principles, preventative care and community health. Manage patient panels with the continuity clinic, addressing a wide range of healthcare needs, including preventive, chronic, and acute care. Prescribe and administer medication, perform routine vaccinations, and provide advice regarding personal health and hygiene. Request necessary test(s) and follow-up visits and refer patients to specialist(s), as necessary.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Extensive knowledge of family medicine principles, practices, and procedures, including obstetrics. Knowledge of patient care management across a wide spectrum of medical conditions. Strong knowledge of medical education, including the ability to teach, mentor, and evaluate family medicine residents effectively. Familiarity with residency program requirements and accreditation standards, Ability to supervise and teach residents. Strong skills in patient communication, ensuring understanding and building trust. Ability to work with a collaborative, multidisciplinary team, providing leadership and support to residents, faculty, and other healthcare professionals. Strong mentoring and supervisory skills, with the ability to guide residents in clinical and professional development. Ability to work effectively with a diverse patient population, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and awareness. Strong organizational skills, ensuring efficient operation of clinical duties, educational sessions, and administrative responsibilities. Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Illinois Medical license or eligibility for licensure in the state of Illinois. Board Certification in Family Medicine, or Board Eligibility. Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Light physical activity performing non-strenuous daily activities of a clinical nature. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
WORK SCHEDULE
Normal work hours and clinical hours for this position are Monday through Friday dayshift; 8:00am to 5pm. The role requires 3-4 clinical half-day sessions per week and 3 half days dedicated to scholarly work unless otherwise directed by program director.
