Clinical Pharmacist Specialists are responsible and accountable for the provision of safe, effective, and prompt medication therapy. Through various assignments within the department, they provide support of centralized and decentralized medication use systems as well as deliver optimal medication therapy to patients within their specialty. All pharmacists are responsible for drug preparation and distribution for medications; evaluating, inputting and verification of medication orders; assisting providers and other health care professionals by serving as a drug information resource; monitoring and managing medication regimens per protocol or per consult; and managing pharmacy inventory.
Job Duties
Provide safe, effective, and timely medication therapy for emergency medicine patients
Deliver clinical pharmacy services in both centralized and decentralized medication use systems
Review, verify, and enter medication orders for appropriateness, including drug selection, dosing, route, frequency, allergies, interactions, contraindications, and therapeutic duplication
Serve as the emergency medicine expert for high-acuity therapies, including vasoactive infusions, sedatives, analgesics, neuromuscular blockers, and other high-risk medications
Monitor and manage medication regimens per approved protocols, consults, and collaborative clinical practice standards
Respond to medical emergencies, including Code Blues, stroke alerts, rapid response events, and other urgent clinical situations
Assist with procedural sedations and rapid sequence intubations to ensure safe and accurate medication preparation and administration
Support nursing staff in the safe use of programmable infusion pumps and other medication delivery technologies in the emergency department
Provide drug information consultation and education to physicians, nurses, patients, and other members of the healthcare team
Participate in antimicrobial stewardship, opioid stewardship, medication use evaluations, adverse drug event reporting, and quality improvement initiatives
Support medication preparation, dispensing, distribution, and inventory management, including compliance with USP 795, 797, and 800 standards
Assist with formulary management, medication policy development, automated dispensing cabinet optimization, and medication-related process improvement activities
Requirements:
Graduate of an accredited College of Pharmacy.
Minimum of three years of job-related experience, or completion of a PGY-1 or PGY-2 ASHP-accredited pharmacy residency in the area of practice in lieu of additional experience.
Current Kentucky Pharmacist License, as applicable to the site.
ACLS certification required within 6 months of hire.
Board Certification required within 1 year of hire.
Demonstrated competency in emergency medicine pharmacotherapy, emergency response medication management, procedural sedation support, rapid sequence intubation (RSI), antimicrobial stewardship, and protocol-based clinical monitoring.
