Job Description

Horizon House, Inc. is a nationally recognized provider of services to adults with support needs due to developmental disabilities, behavioral health challenges, and substance use disorders. Horizon House is Pennsylvania's oldest psychiatric rehabilitation agency. Since 1952, we have been dedicated to helping people with mental illness, drug and alcohol addictions, developmental/intellectual disabilities, and homelessness to stabilize their lives and to help them live as independently as possible in the community. With over 100 locations throughout South and North Eastern Pennsylvania and the state of Delaware, Horizon House provides services to a diverse population focusing on individual strength and choice. We have an immediate opening for a full-time Psychiatrist to work with our established Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team in Swarthmore, PA (Delaware county) supporting adults. The ideal candidate will have experience working with people with serious mental illnesses (including 'dual diagnoses') and their families; enjoy collaboration with other professionals as a key leader of a multi-disciplinary team; and embrace recovery principles. Board eligibility and Pennsylvania licensure required.
Some of the responsibilities include:
Supervising the treatment team in the comprehensive assessment of psychiatric history (e.g., onset, course and effect of illness, past treatment and response, and risk behaviors), mental status, and diagnosis; physical and dental health; use of drugs or alcohol; education and employment; social development and functioning; activities of daily living (e.g., self-care, living situation, nutrition, money management); and family structure and relationships. Collaborating with the registered nurses in assessment of participants' physical health, making appropriate referrals to community physicians for further assessment and treatment, and coordinating medical treatments with psychiatric treatment. Prescribing psychotropic medications and conduct regular assessments of therapeutic responses and side effects and educate clients regarding psychotropic medications. Performing individual, group and family supportive therapy and psychotherapy and illness education in the process of carrying out the tasks above. Along with other team members, provide support, education, and counseling to family members of clients to help them become knowledgeable about mental illness, collaborate in the treatment process, and assist in their family member's progress Providing on-site crisis assessment and management of patients during regular work hours, both on-site and over the phone, after hours, and as on-call backup to the first-line on-call staff. Qualifications Medical Doctor. Possess valid PA state license to practice medicine. Board certified or board eligible in psychiatry. Skills and competence to establish supportive trusting relationships with persons with severe and persistent mental illnesses and respect for client rights and personal preferences in treatment are essential. Clinical supervisory experience is desirable. Must be knowledgeable of the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) model. Possession of a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
