Representing more than 200 physicians, UT Physicians are leaders in clinical care, research and education of the future physicians, providing care in a wide range of medical specialties from the most complex diagnoses and treatments to primary care for the entire family. The primary site of inpatient care services is at the University of Toledo Medical Center, but many of our physicians' practice at hospitals and medical offices throughout the region.
POSITION SUMMARY
As a Clinical Psychology Extern in the University of Toledo Physician Clinical Psychology Externship Program, under supervision of Clinical Psychologies, you will engage in a comprehensive, structured training experience designed to develop advanced clinical competencies across diverse patient populations and care settings.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
Key Responsibilities:
Serve as a clinician in the outpatient psychiatry clinic, conducting diagnostic assessments and delivering evidence-based psychotherapy and psychological interventions. Provide consultation services and support to a diverse patient population within the Greater Toledo area. Participate in an outpatient clinical health psychology rotation, offering comparable psychological services to patients with primary medical conditions. Conduct specialized evaluations, including pre-surgical assessments for kidney transplant candidates. Engage in the Observed Psychotherapy Clinic, collaborating with psychiatry residents, medical students, and an attending psychologist to enhance clinical skills through direct observation and feedback.Training & Supervision:
Attend and actively participate in weekly group supervision sessions. Participate in didactic seminars to support ongoing professional development. Receive primary supervision from a licensed psychologist. Collaborate with and receive guidance from a multidisciplinary team of five supervising psychologists.Learning Objectives:
Develop proficiency in diagnostic assessment and case conceptualization. Strengthen skills in delivering evidence-based psychotherapy across diverse clinical populations. Gain experience in integrated behavioral health and clinical health psychology settings. Enhance interdisciplinary collaboration and professional communication skills.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Enrollment in an accredited Clinical Psychology doctoral program. Strong interest in outpatient psychiatry, health psychology, and interdisciplinary care. Demonstrated commitment to evidence-based practice and culturally responsive care. Communication and Other skills Demonstrates clinical competency in caring for patients as identified in Scope of Care for specific services provided. Demonstrates competency in the care of the patient in the following stages of the life cycle: infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatrics. Protects privacy and confidentiality, handles highly sensitive material. Effective program and care coordination skills. Share information, observations and conclusions clearly and promptly. Utilizes effective communication to provide excellent communication services. Maintains high level of ethical standards.WORKING CONDITIONS
Primarily work will be performed in clinical outpatient office setting in a well-light and ventilated areas. Must be able to work flexible hours. Must be able to tolerate busy office environment that requires constant interaction with patients, employees, students, residents, and clinicians. Might be exposed to individuals who may display erratic behavior and must be able to utilize appropriate crisis training. Must be able to work effectively both with internal and external customers in stressful situations.
