6/5/2026 SUMMARY Under the general supervision of the Lead MRI Technologist, but according to standard procedures, operates a MRI unit and related equipment in order to produce MR images of any designated anatomical area. Collects and completes records on patient data and equipment operation. Provides assistance to patients and Radiologists. Solves minor equipment problems. Performs calibration tests and other quality control functions on equipment and notifies services personnel as required. RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepares and calibrates the MRI unit for daily operation. Selects proper technical factors on an individual patient basis. Screens all patients and visitors prior to entry into the magnetic imaging area. Appraises physical condition of all patients to determine durability to withstand the procedure. Verifies and/or obtains informed consent for examinations requiring consent. Records and maintains patient history from the patient's chart, referring physician and/or by interviewing the patient. Positions patients for imaging to obtain satisfactory examinations and performs requested procedures. Protects and immobilizes patient in accordance with prescribed safety standards. Utilizes a wide variety of technical equipment including computers, radio frequency generators, gradient coils, multi-format cameras, film processors and other miscellaneous equipment to produce MRI images. Performs complex imaging of cross-sectional, sagittal, coronal and obliquely generated MRI images. Prepares and labels films to be interpreted by the radiologist. Ability to troubleshoot an equipment problem. Assists the radiologist developing new procedures. Assists in development of technical factors and film selection. Participates in in-service education programs for technical staff and other hospital support groups. Participates in clinical instruction and supervision of radiological students. Maintains a thorough knowledge of the latest developments in the MRI field. Maintains knowledge of nursing procedures such as sterile techniques and infection control. Observes established departmental policies, as well as state, local and federal regulations. Maintains ethical conduct with all medical and non-medical personnel. Maintains a working area in a clean and orderly condition. Performs other related duties as assigned and/or required. Understands and practices ALARA principles of Radiation Protection including the use and exchange of personal dosimeters. Understands and practices principles of safety with regards to strong magnetic fields as those generated by MRI systems.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Registered Radiologic Technologist (ARRT). MRI (ARRT MR) Certification within 24 months of employment in classification. Current BLS Certification. Two years formal training in an approved School of Radiological Technology required. Registration through the American Registry for Radiological Technologists. Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to neonate, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. Basic understanding of the operation of computer consoles. An in-depth knowledge of the MRI equipment in order to analyze equipment problems and arrange for its repair. The interpersonal skills necessary to interface effectively with patients, patient's families, departmental staff, physicians, and others.
EXPERIENCE
Six months experience as a Radiologic Technologist in a hospital radiology department plus six months specialized training in the operation of the MRI unit.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Exposure to high magnetic fields. Individual cannot have any physical condition that would be aggravated by magnetic fields. May be in contact with patients with communicable diseases. May be in contact with chemicals from automatic film processors. May be exposed to radiation. Ability to lift and move patients to and from examining table, transport patients in wheelchairs and/or stretchers and to lift and carry cassettes.
