Job Description

Overview The Recreation Therapist is accountable for planning, organizing and carrying out therapeutic recreational activities which improve the physical, mental and social well-being of patients. Responsibilities Plan recreational activities and post a weekly activity calendar. Organize such activities as sports, dramatics, nature study, social activities, games, movies, group outings and arts and crafts in accordance with patients' needs, capabilities and interests as determined by discussions with other members of the rehabilitation team and interviews with the patient. Work with small groups and individual patients as part of their treatment program. Assign patients to activity groups. Observe and document patient's involvement in Recreational Therapy Activities and prepare reports for the medical staff and other members of the treatment team reflecting patient's reactions. Survey the therapeutic recreation program and recommend changes or modifications. Prepare budgets and periodic reports of activities. Order and maintain supply of recreation apparatus and equipment. Maintain close and cooperative association with therapeutic recreation departments in other community agencies. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelors degree in recreation therapy, AND National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC), or completion of the 400 hours of clinical training required for certification, AND Six months experience in a psychiatric setting.
POSITION PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must possess the physical ability needed to exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally; and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently; and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for light work.
SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES
Responsible for planning, organizing and providing appropriate recreation for patients. Responsible for reporting significant reactions of individual patients to medical and/or hospital staff. Responsible for maintaining records and preparing reports as necessary. Responsible for insuring appropriate equipment is available.
