  • Full-time Job Summary We are seeking a dynamic and compassionate Therapeutic Recreation Director to lead innovative recreational therapy programs that enhance the quality of life for individuals across diverse care settings.
In this role, you will design, implement, and oversee engaging therapeutic activities tailored to meet the unique needs of residents and clients, promoting physical, emotional, and social well-being. This paid position offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact through specialized therapeutic interventions that span music therapy, art therapy, dance therapy, equine experience, yoga, swimming, and more. Responsibilities Develop and coordinate comprehensive therapeutic recreation programs incorporating activities such as music therapy, dance therapy, art therapy, yoga, swimming, and equine-assisted therapies to support residents' mental health and physical wellness. Conduct patient assessments to identify individual needs and craft personalized treatment plans aligned with medical documentation standards and HIPAA regulations. Lead group and individual therapy sessions focusing on behavioral health, dementia care (including Alzheimer's and PTSD), autism spectrum disorders, geriatrics, pediatrics, hospice care, and special education environments. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams—including nurses, social workers, medical professionals, and case managers—to ensure holistic care delivery. Manage intake processes for new clients or residents by gathering detailed information through diagnostic evaluations and behavioral assessments. Collect data on program effectiveness through meticulous data collection techniques to inform continuous improvement efforts. Supervise recreational staff in executing therapeutic activities while ensuring compliance with safety protocols such as crisis management and behavior management strategies. Maintain accurate medical records and documentation of all therapeutic interventions in accordance with healthcare regulations. Promote a positive environment by integrating activities like dancing, working with children or individuals with disabilities, working with autism or developmental disabilities to foster social engagement and emotional resilience. Experience Proven experience in recreational therapy or therapeutic recreation within healthcare settings such as nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospitals (including hospice), or community care environments. Demonstrated expertise in specialized therapies including music therapy, art therapy, dance therapy, yoga, equine experience or other alternative modalities aimed at mental health improvement. Strong background working with diverse populations including seniors (geriatrics), individuals with dementia (Alzheimer's care), autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities, PTSD care or behavioral health challenges. Familiarity with medical terminology, patient assessment procedures, medical records management and HIPAA compliance is essential. Experience in crisis management and behavior management techniques to handle complex situations effectively. Ability to lead group therapy sessions while fostering an inclusive environment that encourages participation from all age groups—children through seniors—and diverse backgrounds.
