Job Description

QUALIFICATIONS
(1) Associate's degree from an accredited nursing school. (2) Valid Alabama license as a Registered Nurse. (3) Current first aid and CPR certification. (4) Three (3) years successful experience in pediatric, public health, or school nursing preferred. (5) Must meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama statutes and State Board of Education regulations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to implement plans for students with chronic health problems and coordinate the administration of medication within state law and School Board policies. Ability to observe students for development and health patterns in making a nursing judgment and diagnosis. Knowledge of public health nursing as it applies to the public school system. Ability to work with school personnel, parents, children and agencies. Ability to communicate orally and in writing. Ability to work independently and make decisions with minimum supervision. Ability to handle multiple tasks in a professional and courteous manner. Ability to work cooperatively with others.

JOB GOAL
To promote and assist with the medical welfare of students so that they may perform to the extent of their abilities.
SUPERVISES
School personnel when assigned
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • (1) Provide routine first aid and health procedures including proper referral of serious illnesses or injury.
  • (2) Administer medications following school and system policies.
  • (3) Assist students with required medications and document according to established guidelines.
  • (4) Administer CPR if indicated in emergency situations.
  • (5) Serve as a health liaison between home and school.
  • (6) Contact parent/guardian as needed.
  • (7) Counsel students and parents concerning health problems.
  • (8) Provide nursing assessment and health appraisals of students to identify existing or potential health problems, communicable disease or other conditions affecting school performance.
  • (9) Provide referral and follow-up of identified health problems when appropriate and report communicable diseases to appropriate agencies.
  • (10) Supervise pediculosis screenings and other services as appropriate.
  • (11) Support and participate in health screening activities and special clinics.
  • (12) Assist health professionals to assure smooth traffic flow during scheduled school health clinics.
  • (13) Assist health professionals to perform and document required screenings.
  • (14) Prepare the school clinic area for use, ensuring safety, cleanliness and adequate supplies.
  • (15) Establish safe clinic procedures.
  • (16) Ensure adherence to good safety standards.
  • (17) Maintain a clinic log of clinic visits by students with appropriate descriptive information.
  • (18) Maintain a current list of students with acute and/or chronic conditions.
  • (19) Review health records and immunization for compliance.
  • (20) Assist school personnel with completion of incident/accident reports.
  • (21) Prepare all required reports and maintain all appropriate records.
  • (22) Conduct health related classroom presentations.
  • (23) Serve as a member of the Building Based Student Support Team as needed.
  • (24) Participate in staff meetings as directed.
  • (25) Organize and plan to maximize use of available time.
  • (26) Maintain a cooperative working relationship with appropriate governmental agencies.
  • (27) Demonstrate initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
  • (28) Meet and deal effectively with the general public, staff members, parents, administrators and other contact persons using tact and good judgment.
  • (29) Follow attendance, punctuality and appropriate dress rules.
  • (30) Ensure adherence to good safety standards.
  • (31) Maintain confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  • (32) Model and maintain high ethical standards.
  • (33) Maintain expertise in assigned area to fulfill position goals and objectives.
  • (34) Participate successfully in the training programs offered to increase skill and proficiency related to assignment.
  • (35) Exercise service orientation when working with others.
  • (36) Keep supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events.
  • (37) Use effective, positive interpersonal communication skills.
  • (38) Respond to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.
  • (39) Serve on school/system committees as required or appropriate.
  • (40) Exhibit interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member.
  • (41) Follow federal and state laws and School Board policies, rules and regulations.
  • (42) Demonstrate support for the school system and its goals and priorities.
  • (43) Demonstrate initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement.
  • (44) Prepare or assist in the preparation of all required reports and maintain all appropriate records.
  • (45) Participate successfully in the training programs offered to increase skill and proficiency.
  • (46) Participate in cross-training activities as required. Perform other tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position.
  • Essential Performance Responsibilities
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force as needed to move objects. Job Description Supplement 04 TERMS
OF EMPLOYMENT
Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the system's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the system.
EVALUATION
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
