Job Description

Overview:
The Operating Room Staff Nurse functions primarily as a professional operating room nurse in the surgery center and assists as needed in other areas (pre-op and recovery) to assure the highest level of perioperative care for each patient. The position is under the supervision of the Director of Nursing/Administrator and involves good communication skills with all areas of the center and a thorough knowledge of procedures, equipment, and medications used in the OR.
Position Scope:
The position's responsibilities encompass several areas and include providing a standard of excellence in the care of the patient before, during, and after surgical intervention, respecting the rights of the patient as an individual, confidentiality of patient information, and providing nursing care which is in keeping with the physician's plan of care.
Position Functions:
1.
  • Maintains quality care on the Operating Room. Possesses knowledge of perioperative nursing and is able to apply it to the ambulatory surgery setting. 2.
  • Interacts favorably with the patient, the patient's family, physicians, and co-workers in a professional manner. 3.
  • Anticipates possible critical events and has prior provisions ready to deal with such events. Deals with personnel problems through proper channels. 4.
  • Provides patient teaching through pre-operative visits and whenever possible during the operative stay. Assists with the orientation of new personnel. 5.
  • Ensures that infection control procedures are followed. 6.
  • Ensures patient safety throughout procedures. 7.
  • Functions as patient advocate during facility stay.
Position Activities :
Assesses the physical, psychosocial, growth, and development of the operating room suite: Equipment and supplies are altered immediately if the patient assessment indicates change. Patient is continually assessed in the Operating Room Suite and any change in the medical condition of the patient is reported to appropriate personnel. Plans patient care and procedure needs:
  • Plan of care is individualized for each patient based on the procedure, the nursing assessment, and departmental guidelines.
  • Plan of care encompasses anticipating the operating room team's needs and providing equipment and supplies in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Knowledge of the procedure allows the nurse to plan and notify the appropriate personnel when the next case should begin. Implements plan of care for intra-operative patients:
  • The preference card is checked prior to each procedure to verify presence of appropriate instrumentation and equipment.
  • A therapeutic environment is maintained in a safe and comfortable manner for patients/families in accordance with The Center's standards.
  • Physicians are assisted with examinations, procedures, and other processes related to direct patient care in a timely and professional manner.
  • The operating room team is assisted during operating room procedures in a professional manner following departmental guidelines.
  • Supplies listed as available are not opened until the need is identified.
  • Medications are provided per guidelines.
  • Is responsible for "time-out" in OR along with ensuring proper surgical site verification. Evaluates patient's care and appropriateness of care given:
  • Evaluation of the patient and operating room team is constantly maintained in order to determine if a change in the care plan is needed to meet the needs of the physician or patient.
  • Evaluation of the patient's skin condition is performed immediately after patient is placed in transport vehicle.
  • Evaluation of proper body position of the patient on the transport vehicle is always completed upon arrival and before leaving operating room suite. Documents and completes patient related documents per policy:
  • Patient information is legibly and accurately documented in patient record.
  • Preference cards are modified as necessary in an appropriate manner. Participates in teaching staff, students, and others:
  • Professional, helpful, positive manner is used in instruction at all times.
  • Students and new staff members are assisted, encouraged, and guided in a positive manner.
  • Interest is demonstrated in learning about new equipment, instruments, and procedures as the opportunity is presented. Organizes and maintains work area, equipment, and supplies:
  • The operating room nurse's designated room is checked and restocked as needed.
  • Inservice classes are attended, and participation is active. Demonstrates knowledge and skills appropriate to the age of patients served:
  • Appropriate age-specific safety measures are demonstrated when providing patient care.
  • Is current in CPR and ACLS.
  • Psychosocial growth and development concepts are integrated into patient care.
  • Physical growth and development assessment activities are demonstrated.
  • Age-specific practices are applied when administering medications to adult, and/or geriatric patients.
Performs other duties as needed to ensure the safety and comfort of all customers as well as the efficient operation of the facility.
Education and Experience:
Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a current Alabama license as Registered Nurse (RN) and have had at least two (2) years experience in an operating room. Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of general nursing and the principles and practices of OR nursing. Must be ACLS certified.
Physical Requirements:
Position requires: extensive mobility, walking, standing, stooping, and bending; pushing, pulling, and lifting of equipment and patients of various weights; exposure to contaminated/biohazard wastes and bodily fluids as well as harsh cleaning agents and toxic chemicals; requires use of medical and mechanical equipment, requiring full manual dexterity and eye/hand coordination; requires mental alertness and accuracy for quality patient care and decision making, as well as ability to work under stressful, hurried conditions; must have physical stamina to work extra hours if needed. Refer to the description of essential functions.
Personal:
Must be able to organize work and help others to do so efficiently, to be able to motivate others, to interact favorably with members of the surgical team, to maintain professional integrity and ethical judgment; must be able to get along with others. This is a PRN (as needed) position. Hours vary and are dependent upon the facility's surgical schedule. There is no minimum or guaranteed number of hours.
Pay:
From $33.50 per hour
