BASIC FUNCTION
Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent, School Principal and District Nurse, the LVN conducts a health service program for all schools in the district for the evaluation, improvement and protection of the health of pupils and school personnel in accordance with state law and district policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Administers simple first aid to pupils and staff.
  • Checks and rechecks for head lice as needed.
  • Makes calls to verify student absences and records the information.
  • Provides a variety of specialized health care and first aid for students, including physically disabled students; assesses type and extent of student illness or injury and administers appropriate health care, including emergency assistance such as CPR, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and the Heimlich maneuver and assists students with epileptic seizures.
  • Performs a variety of specialized health care services such as catheterization, oral suctioning and gastrostomy tube feedings physically disabled students; cleans catheters and administers chest percussion and postural drainage procedures; assists with range-of-motion exercises and oral care.
  • Provides a variety of health care services such as bandaging, checking temperatures, and blood pressure, removing splinters, assisting with meals and personal hygiene, treating bee stings and other related services.
  • Screens student records for proper immunizations; alerts parents of needed immunizations; maintains communication with parents until required records of immunizations are provided; assures immunization records comply with State laws.
  • Maintains necessary records and reports related to student accidents, illnesses, medications and other related information; maintains emergency cards and health files.
  • Performs a variety of clerical duties such as typing, copying and filing; types a variety of reports, correspondence, forms, notices and referrals.
  • Maintains first aid kits on campus; requisitions and maintains inventory of Health Office supplies; maintains Health Office in a clean, sanitary, safe and organized condition.
  • Administers medications to students in accordance with State laws and District policies and procedures.
  • Assists School Nurse in scheduling hearing and vision testing, dental and scoliosis checks.
  • Serves as a liaison between the School Nurse, staff, parents and community.
  • Operates a variety of office and health equipment, including a typewriter, personal computer, copier, stethoscope, electronic thermometer, otoscope, sphygmomanometer, glucometer, suction machine, catheterization equipment, gastrostomy feeding tubes, respiratory inhaler and air resuscitation bag.
  • Responds appropriately and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Works confidentially with discretion.
  • Cleans work areas (e.g., sinks, counters, buckets, cots) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary environment.
  • Prepares documentation (e.g., daily logs, medication logs, accident reports, etc.).
  • Provides information on medical treatments for the purpose of instruction teachers, students and/or parents on various health subjects (e.g., lice, drug prevention, personal hygiene).
  • Maintain each classroom and office first aid kit stocked.
  • Assists the District Nurse in health screenings and follow-ups with parents.
  • Assists the District Nurse in the preparation of State Health Reports.
  • Assists other personnel as may be required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Transports students/self for the purpose of conducting home visit or obtaining emergency care.
  • Sterilize, disinfect, and bandage minor cuts, abrasions, and burns.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education:
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • College level course work in nursing or related health care leading to license as a Licensed Vocational Nurse.
Experience:
  • Any combination equivalent to one-and-a half years of college level course work in nursing or related health care field and two years of clinical experience.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish required.
License:
  • Valid California Driver's License.
  • Current California license as a Licensed Vocational Nurse.
  • Valid First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificates.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
  • Various first aid and health emergencies.
Ability to:
  • Take care of minor health needs as they arise.
  • Assist in emergencies if need be.
  • Operate standard office equipment.
  • Use English and Spanish in both written and verbal form
  • Use assessment instruments and interpretation of test data.
  • Perform basic first aid and health care practices and procedures.
  • Apply intervention techniques in crisis situation.
  • Maintain records, manage programs, operate equipment in a proper and safe manner.
  • Apply relevant education codes, federal, state and county policies.
  • Reason at a level to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral and/or diagrammatic form.
  • Sit for prolonged periods, deal with people beyond receiving work and instructions.
  • Perform effectively under stress, make judgements and decisions.
  • Perform a variety of duties involving frequent changes of tasks, aptitudes, techniques, procedures.
  • Significant physical visual acuity/depth perception.
  • Type at least 35 words per minute without error.

Requirements / Qualifications
Valid California Driver's License Current California license as a Licensed Vocational Nurse. Valid First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent. Must have a current LVN License. Must have experience equivalent to one-and-a half years of college level course work in nursing or related health care field or two years of clinical experience. Must be bilingual in English/Spanish.
