Job Description

Position Title:
District Nurse Position Summary The District Nurse supports the physical, mental, emotional, and social health of students in a rural school district. This role provides direct nursing care, health education, emergency response, chronic disease management, and coordination with families, healthcare providers, and community agencies. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Provide direct nursing care to students and staff, including first aid, illness assessment, and emergency response. Administer medications and treatments according to physician orders and district policies. Develop and maintain individualized healthcare plans (IHPs), emergency action plans (EAPs), and care plans for students with chronic conditions. Monitor and support students with conditions such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, allergies, and mental health concerns. Conduct health screenings including vision, hearing, and immunization compliance. Maintain accurate student health records in compliance with FERPA, HIPAA, and state regulations. Respond to medical emergencies and coordinate with EMS when necessary. Provide health education to students, staff, and families on topics such as nutrition, hygiene, disease prevention, substance abuse prevention, and mental wellness. Collaborate with teachers, counselors, administrators, social workers, and special education teams to support student success. Coordinate communicable disease prevention and infection control practices. Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) and Section 504 meetings as appropriate. Will provide medical training to staff. Including but not limited to CPR and Med Delegation. Travel between school sites within the district as needed. Perform additional duties assigned by administration. Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification. Experience in pediatrics, public health, emergency care, or school nursing preferred. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation may be required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong clinical assessment and emergency response skills. Ability to work independently in a rural or geographically dispersed setting. Excellent communication and collaboration skills. Knowledge of child development, public health practices, and special education procedures. Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries. Working Conditions School and office environment with frequent student interaction. May require lifting, bending, standing, and responding to emergencies. Travel between district sites may be required. Exposure to communicable illnesses and medical emergencies. Terms of Employment Part-time, according to district needs. Salary and benefits determined by district salary schedule and board policy. Work calendar follows district-approved contract days.
